High School Graduates

SITTING DOWN AT your high school graduation would make anybody anxious.

But I can tell you it's ten times worse when your boyfriend is a masked superhero and he's nowhere to be seen.

So, I pulled out my phone and called him. And, thank God, he picked up almost immediately.

"Hey, baby, I'm sorry, I'm running a bit late. I got stuck in some traffic."

"Peter, your timing is terrible." I sighed. "It started already."

"I know, I'm sorry."

"Where are you?" I asked him, trying to keep my voice as quiet as possible.

"1st and Broadway, 2nd and Broadway, 3rd and Broadway. Uh, five minutes. Ten tops."

That was when I noticed the sounds in the background of his side of the line.

"Are those sirens?"

"No."

What a liar.

"Peter?"

"No."

"Peter?"

"No sirens. No-"

"Peter, what is going on? Peter. Peter." I got no response and that made me wonder if he was even listening. "Hello? Peter?"

"I'll be right there. Promise."

"This year's valedictorian, please welcome Gwen Stacy." My head shot up quickly at the sound.

"You better hurry. Gwen's about to give her speech." I told him before hanging up to start applauding for my sister.

I was excited to hear her properly read it out, having heard her recite it in the mirror for weeks as she practiced.

Gwen stood up and walked up to the stage to begin her speech.

"Good morning, esteemed faculty and families of my fellow graduates. It's an honor to be standing up here today." Her voice echoed around through the microphone. "I know that we all think we're immortal, we're supposed to feel that way, we're graduating. The future is and should be bright, but,
like our brief four years in high school, what makes life valuable is that it doesn't last forever, what makes it precious is that it ends."

I know that now more than ever. And I say it today of all days to remind us that time is luck. So don't waste it living someone else's life, make yours count for something. Fight for what matters to you, no matter what. Because even if we fall short, what better way is there to live?"
