The Investigator

"Is this first class?" I ask Owen as I sit in a large seat with a small screen in front of us.

"Yes. Maybe we'll join the mile high club." He smiles over at me while he takes a seat.

"Oh, sweetheart, you wish." I wink at him before turning my attention to the flight attendant in the isle.

"Hello Mr. Waren." Her flirtatious smile making my blood boil ever so slightly. Moving my eyes over her, she has her hair pulled back into a slick low bun and her apparel snatching her waist slightly. He nods to her, acknowledging her presence.

"Do you need anything?" She asks only to him. I roll my eyes at her sad attempt.

"Actually yes. I do need something." I speak up sitting straight in my seat. I meet her eyes, she squints at me while giving me a disgusted look.

"And who are you?" She spit her words out at me.

"Oh my apologies ma'am, I'm the woman that fucks the man you're currently hitting on. So get us a bottle of wine before I get you fired and before you say anything yes, I do have the power to do so." I give her a wide smile while resting my hand on Owens arm. Watching her, she rolls her eyes and with a huff, walks away. I relax in my seat, turning towards Owen.

"Little flame, a bit jealous now are we?" His words have the heat rising in my cheeks.

"Maybe but, don't act like you wouldn't be any better if you were in the same position." I state before getting ready for a long flight. I wonder if I'll see my mom.

We landed and I can't believe I'm saying this but, while we ride down the roads of Colorado I've missed the fuck out of this place. I can't wait for all of this to be over but, when it is I don't know if Owen will still be apart of my life. How I know I'm getting a bit attached is the thought of never seeing him and his beautiful golden brown eyes makes me want to crawl up into a ball and cry.

Turning to Owen, he's relaxed in the drivers seat driving with one hand. He's ridiculously handsome and I have no idea why he's so interested in me, but I won't question it. Because I have no idea why I'm so attracted to him. His craziness, addictive personality and even his obsession drives me wild..

Arriving at my old house in Denver, we came here to plan out what questions we're going to ask Ashley's parents. I really hope that Owen is wrong about the situation. If Ashley isn't who she portrayed to me through all those years of friendship. I think I'll go crazy. Genuinely crazy.

As Owen steps out of the car coming over to my side to offer me his hand like he always seems to do I don't move. I'm too lost in thought to care about anything else. I never thought I'd be in this situation where I'd have to question my best friends parents about their missing daughters whereabouts. I know Owen wants to question her identity.

"It'll be okay little flame." Owen speaks softly, as he squats down, placing his hand on my knee.

"I know. Let's head inside." I say, snapping back to reality as Owen moves back from me, I swing my legs out of the car, taking his hand to head inside the house.

Sitting down and getting comfortable in my old reclining chair Owen pulls a chair from the kitchen. I forgot that my house doesn't feel like a home. There's no feeling safe here, from an outsiders prospective they would think that someone just moved out. With the lack of basic home necessities.

"Sorry, I know my house is completely bare of personality." I shrug.

He takes a glance around before his eyes meet mine. "Serena, I don't care what your home looks like but, it has a lot of potential to be a stunning home." He smiles, taking a seat in front of me where he placed the chair.

"I meant to ask earlier. Could we stop at my mother's before we leave Colorado?"

A sly smile appears on his face. Of course he's going to make this about him right now. "You want me to meet your mom?" He raises his brows at me.

"Oh my god you figured it out" I act surprised, bringing my hands up to cover my mouth "no, I just miss my mom." I bring my arms down to my lap.

"Okay sure little flame. Also the questions to ask Ashley's parents might have to be winged so they don't get suspicious." His words catch me off guard. I know that Owen isn't a man that just doesn't have a plan. But I understand he wants me to be oblivious while he sits back and gets all the information he needs. I don't believe this will work.

"Okay, no plan. Great." There's sarcasm in my tone. Watching him, he pushes himself up out of the chair, stepping to me.

"Little flame if you don't trust me then just say so. I'll leave. If we don't have trust, we have nothing." After his statement, he passes me heading to the door. "Come or stay. I'll either do this with you or without."

I hop up from the recliner heading out the door behind him. "If there wasn't going to be a plan, why'd we stop?" I ask, getting back into the car.

"I wanted to see your house again." He states vaguely before whipping the car out of the driveway.

He has seen my house before? My mind goes to Brandon looking into me. He must have found a layout of it on the web. I'd believe if he said he had broke in when I wasn't home though. Considering at one point he was my stalker. Now, he's like my only friend. We haven't been able to sit down and talk about what's happened between us. To me, Owen doesn't seem like a man that will open up easily.

Heading down the main road to Evelyn's and Helmer's house. There is an empty but, nauseating feeling in my stomach telling me this isn't going to go as planned. Oh yeah, never-mind there isn't one.
