Dan's POV
I awoke to the sound of a loud crash echoing throughout the house. Wide awake, I jumped out of bed to go find the source of the disturbance. My feet clicked along the cold tiles of the kitchen floor until I saw Phil on the ground, sweeping up the shards of a coffee mug. Thankfully, it was empty when it was dropped.Phil looked up at me. "Oh, didn't see you there. Good morning."
"What happened?" I asked.
"I don't know. It just slipped out of my hand," he explained unhelpfully.
"Okay, but how?"
"I don't know! It just kinda fell..."
"How though?" I questioned.
"Like, I was holding it and then my hand just let it go, I guess," he told me.
I frowned at him. "Phil, normal hands don't just-"
He stood up and pecked me on the lips. "I understand your concerns, but I'm fine."
"What about those headaches you've been getting in the mornings?"
"They're going away."
But he was lying through his teeth. I could tell, and he could tell that I could tell.
"Dan, why are you so worried?" He asked.
"Because... It's you, Phil. I would hate for you to get sick or anything."
He thought for a moment. "Would a visit to the doctor's pacify you?"
I nodded and kissed him on the lips. His hands found their way onto my hips as the kiss deepened. He reluctantly pulled away. "We can't."
I pouted and stepped back. "You're no fun."
He ruffled my hair. "You know it."
Phil's POV
I scheduled in a doctors appointment for later that day. Out of boredom, I decided to do a random live show. Since it was completely unscheduled, I had a smaller amount of viewers than usual, thus Younow wasn't as laggy as usual.Aside from that, it went normally. I filled the viewers in on my week, leaving out the headaches. They constantly questioned me about phan and would Dan join the show and could I do my northern accent etc. Like I said, pretty standard.
Then Dan poked his head in.
"Hey- oh, you doing a live show?" Dan said as he walked in. "Hi guys!"
The chat nearly exploded. Dan chuckled. "Sorry guys, can't stick around. Meeting up with Chris in 10."
"Have a good time," I said as he walked out the door. The chat was still going on about it.
"You'd think you'd never seen me and Dan interact!" I exclaimed. I checked my phone for the time. I had to go to the doctors now. "Sorry guys, I gotta go as well. It's been nice chatting with you! Maybe I'll do more surprise live shows in the future!" And with that I signed out.
I put on my coat as I walked out the door as the weather had taken a turn for the worse. Storm clouds were beginning to build up on the horizon; dark, heavy clouds that promised the delivery of rain and maybe a little hail.
On the street, I quickly found a cab. I told the driver the address and then we were weaving through the busy streets of London. Everyone was rushing to get home before the storm hit. I hoped whatever Dan and Chris were doing wasn't outdoors.
The driver cleared his throat. We had arrived. I snapped out of my daze and handed him the money. "Keep the change," I told him.
The clinic was a small building just outside the city. It was rather warm and cosy inside, out of the increasingly wild weather. I took my seat in the waiting room and... Waited. It was quite empty; the only other people were a mother and two kids, an elderly man and a woman that looked in her early to mid twenties. She had big, wide eyes and hair that flowed from a dark brown to a light blonde at the tips. Her red lipstick was striking.
"Zoella?" One of the doctors called. She collected her purse and walked after him.
"Phillip?" Another doctor called. I stood and followed her into her office.
"Hello, Phil. I'm Dr. Sinclair." She greeted me as she sat behind her desk.
"So," she began. I noticed how her mascara was all clumpy, the roots of her bleached blonde hair a dark brown. "What seems to be the problem?"
"Well... I've been getting these really bad headaches and... Dizzy spells, I guess?" I offered. Now that I was saying it aloud, it didn't seem that bad.
She nodded, typing something into her computer. "Are the headaches regular? Do they seem to happen at a particular time?"
"Actually, they happen mostly in the morning."
"Like when you wake up?"
"Yeah."
"Okay," She nodded, tapping away at her computer. "Anything else?"
I thought. "This might not be related but the other day... My hand... I don't know what happened exactly, but it went all weak and I dropped my coffee mug."
She nodded thoughtfully. "Can I just check your eyes?"
She grabbed a small flashlight from her desk and shone it in my eyes. I tried not to blink as my eyes started to water.
After a few minutes of the examination, she tutted and went back to her computer. "Okay," She sighed. "I'm going to schedule you in for an MRI at the hospital."
"What?" I asked, incredulous.
"You know, a brain scan."
"I know, I know, but why?"
Finally she turned away from her computer. She looked me in the eye as the next words left her mouth.
"Just to check for a tumour."
I don't know if it shocked me when my first thought went to Dan. How would he react? Can he deal with it? It had barely even sunk in; the fact that there was a chance that I had cancer. That there might be a cancerous tumour attacking my brain and my body.
"But it could be a number of other things. I doubt a fit 28 year old man like yourself would be at much risk," She continued. I nodded along listlessly. "Do you smoke?" She asked.
"No- well, once when I was a kid."
She chuckled. I felt strangely numb inside. Kinda achy. I nodded again and ran my fingers through my hair. My throat felt constricted and I felt like crying.
Just to check for tumour.
Cancer. Surely I didn't have a tumour. Surely. I didn't smoke, I was perfectly healthy, my family didn't have a history of cancer... Denial flitted through my brain. It would all be fine, I thought. Just a fluke. I probably just had a head cold. Yeah, that sounded about right. A head cold.
How was I supposed to tell Dan, though?
