Past

1955

I can't believe what happened last year.

I had to deal with not one, but two enemies. I knew how it happened. Bethany is friends with Danielle, and Bethany told her that if a guest doesn't bring a gift to the person who is turning a certain age, that guest doesn't care. I thought Danielle was being nice when she said it's okay for me to not bring a gift, but later on in the year, Danielle felt really angry that she didn't ever get a gift from me. So not only did she believe Bethany, but she was also angry at me for not bringing her a gift. And then Danielle overreacted and told other people in kindergarten to never invite me to their parties because they wouldn't get a gift from me.

And Danielle started being mean all year just because of that party.

I was happy when my first year of kindergarten ended. I was also happy that summer came and I could just be free.

I liked going to the park, building sand castles, playing in the water park, and playing with my brother. Oh, and I ate ice cream. Summer is my favourite season. I wish it was summer forever and we didn't have to go to school. And finally, it is the last day of summer before I go back to school.

Which is today.

"Here. Take this money and buy yourself an ice cream while I talk to other parents, okay?" Mom said. "Okay!" I said, taking the money and walking to where the ice cream truck was. Seeing the truck makes me feel happy. Since it's summer, a lot of other people are lined up.

I stood in the back of the line, and it felt like years of waiting in line. It felt like forever when, finally, it was my turn to place an order. "What would you like?" The man in the truck said. "Small chocolate ice cream." I said, handing over my money. The man took it, made the ice cream, and gave it to me. "Thank you!" I said I had the manners my teacher in kindergarten taught me.

I licked the ice cream while walking back to the park, where my mom was. Chocolate is my favourite flavour. I took a bite and ate it. Yum. While I was walking, I accidentally stepped on a really big rock, which I didn't notice for a while.

Then I tripped, sending the ice cream flying into the air. I watched in horror as it hit the ground. "No!" I screamed, looking at the ground, then stared at the ice cream. Then tears started to run down my eyes. Looking at the ice cream made us want to cry. Which I did. I screamed and had a really good big cry at what just happened. Who would put a big rock on a sidewalk? Ughhh. The thought of that made me want to cry more.

Suddenly, people around the park stopped and turned around to look at me. I could feel some people whispering about me in each other's ears. I don't know what they were whispering about, but I don't care. I only ate a bite of my ice cream before it dropped! That's not fair! Suddenly, I hear my mom just continuing to talk to her friends, not caring about me at all, and not doing anything. It's like she doesn't care! But she probably just feels embarrassed that I'm crying and trying to pretend I'm not her kid.

"You deserve that!" A familiar voice said. I immediately recognized it. Danielle. "This is what you get for not giving me anything on my birthday! You didn't have to go at all if you didn't have a gift!" She protested. Then she pointed to the ice cream cone. "You don't deserve anything either!"

That just made me cry harder and more sad. "What a big crybaby! And a big loser." Danielle said, followed by more names she ended up calling me. That made me a bit more angry, and I was crying harder than ever. "Okay, Danielle, that's enough. We have to go home. You still have a play date with Bethany." Her mom said, walking over to her. "Oh! Okay!" Danielle suddenly became interested and walked away from me.
