"Do you want to have a birthday party this year?" My mom said it over lunch. It was a weekend, and my brother was out with his friends, and my dad was outside painting the walls for some reason.
I looked up. "Your birthday is coming soon, isn't it?" My mom said this, looking at me. "It is." I said. "Um. Mom. The thing is, me and Carly have the same birthday." Mom blinked. I'm guessing she's surprised. "Really? She said her birthday is on May 15." Mom asked. I nodded. "But not at the same time, right?" "Different times. Yes," I answered.
Suddenly, I have an idea. "I have an idea. Instead of having the party at my house, can I have it at Carly's house? It's her birthday, too. I can come there, and we both could have two celebrations in one house." I said. Mom paused. Then she took the empty plates up to the sink. Then she glanced down at her belly.
"Actually, can Carly come to my house instead? I want my friends to look and try to communicate with the baby." I said. Yeah. My mom is currently expecting a baby, so her belly is a bit big. The baby isn't even born yet, and my mom is obsessing over the baby already instead of me. It's like I'm replaced with the baby.
"Sure." My mom managed to say. "Let me know if you need anything for your birthday. Speaking of it, what do you want for your birthday?" I stopped. "Just get me a toy that looks fun. Or hairbands. I'll have the hairbands, I guess." I said. "My hair is getting long." "Hmm. Ok. I'll think about it." Answered mom.
I went to the living room, took a piece of paper, and went outside. "Hmmm. That looks finished." My dad said this as he put the brush back in the bucket of paint he was holding. "Hi. Can you help plan my party?" I asked him, settling myself on the backyard table. "Sure. Are you making invitations?" He asked. "I have to plan everything before making the invitations." I said. I wrote down: Date: May 15. I then wrote down my house number. "Anything else?" I asked my dad. "Don't forget the time."
I wrote down the time, some people I was planning to invite, the date, and my house number. I looked over it. "Can you help me buy my cake and set up the house?" I asked. "Sure." My dad said, "The decorations and food. I'll talk to your mom about it. Why don't you start making invitations?" He asked. "On it!"
The next day at school, I told Carly all about it. "Really? That's awesome! I wish I could have a party like that." She said when I'm finished. "I know. So I'm asking, Do you want to go?" I asked. Carly stopped for a moment and thought about it. Then she said, "No." "No?? Why?" I said. I then immediately regretted what I said. "I mean, if you can't go, it's ok. I understand." I lied. I was disappointed, but I decided to hide it. Carly fumbled with my invitation. "Do you still want that?" I asked. "I'll keep it." She said.
Sigh. Even if my best friend doesn't want to go, I made invitations for three other people. "Hang on. I'll be back before recess ends, ok?" I told her. I walked over to where Penny was, then gave her the invitation. I waited while she read it. "Is Carly going?" Penny asked. "No." I told her. "But it's okay. I invited two other boys." I said, hopefully that will make her interested. "No," she said. "I don't have time to." She said. "I'm sorry." "It's okay. I understand."
I also made invitations to Thomas and Edison because I and Penny were sort of friends with them. So I also handed the invitations to those who were right with Penny. "Oh, so those were the two boys you were planning to invite?" She asked. They both ended up saying no, and they both said they had the same reason: not available at that time, and either way, they don't have time.
