1961

It's the first day of middle school.

First day of school without Carly. First day of school also without Jenny, because apparently she went to a private school. Bethany goes to the same school with me. Alex, my crush, also goes to this school.

It's okay. I'll be okay. I'll make it out of my first year of middle school alive by the end of the year. I'll survive. My mom said if I wanted to survive, I better do all my homework every day. That's my plan to survive.

I'm already so nervous when I walk into the homeroom.

The bell rang, signalling for the teacher to start. "Hello everyone! I assume you are all in grade six. I'm going to take attendance, then we'll start. Sounds good?" She said.

Everyone nodded.

"Abbas, Bethany."

"Here."

"Andrews, Ashley."

"Here."

The teacher said more names, ordering from a-z by last names. I'm a little in shock at the first name. Bethany? Bethany was in my homeroom class? Ugh. Now how am I going to survive? I thought I wasn't going to be in any of the same classes as her, but why let her be in my homeroom? It isn't fair.

"Can someone take this down to the office for me?" The teacher asked. Bethany raised her hand. The teacher gave her the attendance, and within seconds Bethany was away. Well, now she's out for about five minutes. I smiled. "Okay, you're all new; you're all nervous. I know. But you'll get used to being here in a few weeks. We all get nervous when we go somewhere new, away from our comfort zone. But that's how things are." She said. "My name is Ms. Banks, and I'll be your homeroom teacher. I teach English, but for today we're doing something else."

"Now, why do you think you got told over the announcements to bring your backpacks with you into the class?"

I raised my hand. My mom has gone over tons of what to expect in middle school with me.

"Yes, Ashley?"

"Because in middle school, we have lockers, and that's where we put all our textbooks, backpacks, and belongings." I said.

"What's the difference between middle and elementary school?"

Someone in the front row raised his hand. "In elementary school, you stay in one classroom for the entire day, and one teacher teaches you almost all the subjects—excluding gym. However, in middle school, you get a different teacher for each subject, which also means different classes."

"Ok. And now let's hear her answer." Ms. Banks said.

"The difference between is that middle school has the word "middle," while elementary school has the word "elementary"." She said.

Which made everyone laugh. Suddenly I didn't feel so nervous anymore. "Okay. I'm going to give everyone timetables. Remember, you'll all have different classes too, so don't expect to be in the same ones with your friends." The teacher said.

When I got mine, it says that I have gym after homeroom. A few people talked quietly about their timetables and shared it with their friends, chatting away about what they had. I'm guessing they want to see if they have the same classes.

"Quiet. I will now give you your locker number to go to. Once you get your paper slip, you may go find it and put your backpack away." The teacher said.
