FOR AS LONG AS SHE could remember, Momoi had always been mistaken for someone's girlfriend.
Honestly, you wouldn't believe how many people thought that she was dating her male friends— especially Aomine, her childhood friend. When she was younger, she was fine with it. She never saw anything wrong with it. She would simply laugh it off, deny it, and move on. Simple as that.
However, as she grew older, she realized that brushing off these assumptions wasn't as easy as she had thought. In elementary school, other girls started to dislike her, especially when the boys began to gawk at her. They were jealous of her beauty and found her cheery attitude fake. They believed she intentionally attracted the boys' attention because she craved it for herself. As a result, they shunned her, ignored her attempts to talk to them, and excluded her from their plans.
During her entire elementary school years, she never made a single female friend.
She remembered crying about it to Aomine, who didn't know how to comfort her, but she appreciated his company. She just couldn't understand why people's first thought when they see two people of the opposite gender together is that they are dating? Can't they just simply hang out? Can't they just be friends?
Despite how she couldn't understand the reason behind that thinking, Momoi thought that it was best to keep her distance from boys, starting with Aomine.
"Dai— Aomine-kun! How'd you sleep last night? I couldn't sleep a wink because I was so excited for our first day of high school!" Momoi chirped as they walked together to Teikō Middle School.
Aomine gave her a puzzled look. "Why are you calling me that?"
"Calling you what?"
"'Aomine-kun!'" he mimicked her tone so poorly that Momoi didn't know if she should be offended. "Are we strangers now? Did we just meet yesterday? You're acting like we haven't been friends since we were wearing diapers."
Momoi pouted. "You don't understand! Listen, people have been getting the wrong idea about us for too long. Now that we're high school students, we need to be more mindful. If we seem too close, people will start talking again. I want to have girlfriends, lots of them! And a boyfriend too! I won't get either if they think we're together. Hmph."
"Tsk. I don't like it. Just call me like you usually do," Aomine insisted, rolling his eyes. "If they have a problem with you being friends with me, are they really worth being friends with?"
Momoi puffed out her cheeks in frustration. "Dai-chan, when did you become so wise?"
"I've always been wise!" Aomine shot back, sighing afterwards. "Just be yourself. You'll eventually find friends— girlfriends or boyfriends or whatever."
