It was late and night and tomorrow morning and Hot shot was going to start his treatment for his cancer. Hot shot was ready to be very brave. Hot shot was ready to start his treatment and fight his cancer and show it no mercy. However Hot shot was having hard time sleeping due thinking about his cancer. Hot shot was thinking about what one older boy told about cancer and it made him worry and made it hard to sleep.
Hot shot decided to go into his parents room. Hot shot was feeling a bit worried, alone and afraid at the moment. He was wanting comfort. He climbed into their bed. "Mummy daddy," Hot shot said.
Heatwave and Quickshadow woke up. "What is it son?" Heatwave asked.
"Is something wrong poppet?" Quickshadow asked.
"I am worried about starting treatment tomorrow," Hot shot said.
"I can understand that," Heatwave said.
"Yes we both understand," Quickshadow said. "Many kids get worried about starting their treatment, even grown ups starting treatment for cancer get scared and worried in the beginning," she said. "So it is normal," she said.
"One of the older kids at the clinic before one my check ups to see if I am ready to start treatment said some things about cancer that kind of worry and scare me," Hot shot said.
"What did he tell you?' Quickshadow asked.
"He told me some people with cancer don't get better and die, is that true?" Hot shot asked.
"Yes Hot shot it is," Quickshadow said. "Over 70 years ago cancer was a death sentence," she said. "But after world war two things began to improve for cancer patients as treatments began to become more efficient," she said. "Now more kids, adults and even animals with cancer are getting better and going back to their lives," she said.
"He also told me cancer sometimes comes back is that true too?" Hot shot asked.
"Yes Hot shot sometimes cancer does come back," Quickshadow said. "But that is what doctors do tests and check ups once treatment is over to make sure the cancer stays away once it goes away," she said. "If it comes back they can come up with a plan to make it go away again," she said.
"What will happen if I don't get better?" Hot shot asked. "What if treatment doesn't work?" he asked.
"There is a chance of that I know," Quickshadow said. "Whether or not treatment works we want you to live as normal a life as possible during treatment. We want you to still be a kid, we will still do a lot of fun things and try to get you to go to school," she said. "We will even plan on fun trips and the hospital will help us with those plans by recommending hospitals to take you too if you have problems during the trip and need to see a doctor to help," she said. "So no matter what happens we will make you are happy," she said.
"Oh okay," Hot shot said. "But the chance of dying does sound scary," he said.
"I know it is," Quickshadow said. "The most important thing to remember is pain and suffering goes away after death," she said. "Another important thing to remember is the doctors are going to try to do everything to save your life," she said. "No matter what happens we are here for you," she told him.
"Does the rest of the family know I have cancer?" Hot shot asked.
"Yes they know," Quickshadow said. "They are with us all the way and are going to be very supportive of you," she said. "So everything is going to be alright," she said.
"Okay," Hot shot said. "Can I sleep in here tonight?" he asked.
"Of course son," Heatwave said.
"We just have to be careful of his central line," Quickshadow said.
