RORY
"Okay you scare me. What happened?" asked Adam. He had to put up with me the whole day so I wasn't surprised when he finally snapped after practice.
I didn't want to be dramatic but I just couldn't control my feelings. I know I was not at my best, I kept messing up things at practice and looked like I was ready to throw myself out of a window which caused everyone else around me to act the same.
Hah. I didn't know that I had this effect on the people close to me. It felt weird.
"Told you it's nothing."
"Dude, you're not my girlfriend so stop acting like that."
"That was sexist," I mumbled as we sat down in the locker room. "Plus you don't even have a girlfriend."
"Not the point," he rolled his eyes.
I knew that I was acting illogical. It's just. . . It bothered me how Mark acted like Adam was some kind of protector. Okay, we didn't talk that much because I acted like an idiot around him but still.
"Is this about. . . You-Know-Who? Do you want me to beat him up?" Adam asked.
"Don't fight unnecessarily. Wait, can you even fight?" he hit me on the shoulders for that. It was well deserved I guess.
"Fine, okay. Don't tell me. I don't care anyways."
I rolled my eyes. "It's just my usual problem. It will go away soon I think." I hope.
"Let's make a bet!"
"No."
"If you get together by the end of. . . next month, I win. If you don't, you win. Loser has to go to school in girl clothes for a day."
"No."
"Okay, let me write a contract," he nodded and teared a page out of one of his notebooks.
He started writing, I, Rory Something Ace. . .
"Wait, you don't know my middle name?" I asked in disbelief. I wasn't mad about this but the whole situation was ridiculous.
"Uh, I know it's something with an R." He crossed out the "Something" and wrote "Romething" there instead.
I shook my head but signed his poorly made contract and after I started whining about him not having one I started writing one too.
I, Adam Something Smith, - I wrote "Something" even though I knew his full name - promise that if Rory Romething Ace and Mark Something Something didn't get together by the end of next month I will go to school in a skirt and in a tight top.
For the record, I knew Mark full name too. Adam didn't.
"You said that you stalked him," I laughed. "Why don't you know his name?"
"Ugh let me be," he groaned. "You know that I suck with names."
We walked out of the school laughing about this when we noticed Mark. I slowly stopped talking while Adam greeted him loudly.
Were they that good friends? Saying "hi" every time they meet? Since when?
"Hi," Mark said uncharacteristically quietly. I looked at him questioningly but didn't ask anything. "Um, Rory can I talk to you for a sec? I mean Adam can stay here too if he wants but. . . yeah."
Adam shrugged and walked away as he called someone.
I nodded, "Um, is everything- everything alright?"
"Define alright," he laughed and oh my god he had the cutest laugh I have ever heard. I let out a shaky breath. "But yes I just need a really big flavor. I know we don't really talk and I was an asshole but I really really really need your help. Please?"
"Yeah, sure!" I agreed without a second thought.
Mark smiled at me, "You don't even care what I want?" I hesitated. "I need a place to stay for a few days. I can pay everything so don't worry about that. I would just sleep there."
What the fuck.
What the fuck what the fuck what the fuck.
Did he- did he just-
"I know it's a big thing since we don't know each other but-"
"No," I basically screamed at him. "It's uh fine. So you- you want to stay with my house? I mean with me in my house? Well, technically my mom's house not mine. Obviously." I wanted to walk into oncoming traffic.
"Only if it's not a big issue. I already asked others like Adam, so you're my only option."
"Yeah, of course it's not a problem!"
. . .
"I think he's broken."
"What happened?"
"I don't know. He was like this all day."
"Adam! Do you know what's up with Rory? I think he's been autopilot all day. Like I didn't see him blink once. It's scaring the shit out of me."
"Oh yeah, he's fine."
"You sure?"
"Absolutely. Just give him a few hours. Or days. He's just got some shocking news."
What the fuck.
"I'm fine," I managed to say after a few minutes. "Adam. You and I. Talk."
"Yeah, talking like this is not scary at all. . ." I heard Mike whisper.
I dragged Adam to the halls, "Did he seriously ask you first?"
"Well I don't know about being the first. But he did ask."
"And why did he change his mind?"
"Dude are you serious?" he laughed. "I'm helping you here. I told him that I have like 5 older brothers and I live in a very dirty house. It's impossible to live at mine."
"You're an only child clean freak."
"You're very welcome. To show your gratitude buy me something nice."
"But why did he come to me?" I asked still not understanding what's happening with my life right now.
"Because I gave a 5 out of 5 review. Talked at length about your perfect family, perfect room and perfect personality," he said as it was not a big deal.
Was I really jealous of Adam when he wanted the best for me since day one? What's wrong with me?
"Thank you."
"Whatever," he pushed me with a smile on his face.
