RORY
"You haven't talked since that?" asked Adam as we walked towards to lockers.
"Once. He asked if our parents can meet up tomorrow, other than that nothing," I shrugged. I tried my best to not show how hurt I was because of that, which based on his expression wasn't successful.
We were talking about Mark, obviously. We talked via texts the day before yesterday and he hasn't answered to me. I thought that not talking face-to-face would be easier. Maybe it would be if he would reply but whatever. It hurt, of course it did. It hurt more than him not talking to me school.
"It's fine. He's probably just busy," Adam tried to comfort me.
"For two days straight?" I raised an eyebrow. "It's kind of hopeless anyways, isn't it? We talked a handful of times and he still doesn't even see me as a friend."
"Don't give up, dude," Adam gave me an awkward smile. "You guys will be good when he'll be at yours."
"I still don't wanna make a move when he's depending on me."
"Oh I'm not afraid of that. You can't even say hi to him, there's no way you would confess or something."
"Asshole." He laughed at me.
"You're cool bro. You know what surprises me though?" He stopped mid walking and but his arms on his waist. "The fact that you're not freaking out."
"Why would I?"
"I mean, you shouldn't," he shrugged, "But you'll meet his parents tomorrow. And if everything goes according to plan you guys will be together in a few days. Just make a good impression to them I guess."
I groaned in response. "This will be the most uncomfortable evening of my life."
"Yeah, probably."
. . .
MARK
When I got home from school my parent instantly dragged me to the kitchen. They had this weird look on their face, like they were waiting for this moment. Mom pushed a tray of cookies to me and smiled at me sweetly. I gave them a confused look.
"We have a few questions," mom started. "About... what was his name again?" Ah, so that's why they were acting like that.
"Rory?" I asked back. They nodded in reply. "What about him?"
"Nothing much, we just want to know more about him. Does he have siblings?"
"Uh, I'm not sure? Maybe one?" I was fairly positive that I heard him once talking about his brother, but he never mentioned to me directly.
"Does he live with both of his parents?"
"What is this, twenty questions?" They rolled their eyes at me. They were always in sync, which sometimes creeped the shit out of me.
"Okay, how does he looks like? What's his eye color?"
"I... don't know? What?" I was speechless. I knew that they were excited about me having new friends but this seemed a little too much. "Why does it even matter?"
"Well, I guess it doesn't," mom said eventually. "We're just curious! Come on, you can't blame us for this."
"Also," dad spoke up. "You will be alone with a boy for a few days. Now look son, we were seventeen once too, we know that-"
"This conversation," I cut him off. "Is not happening. Not now, not ever."
He didn't pay any attention to me and continued anyway, "Even though you're gay, you still need to be safe, you know that, right?"
"Oh my god. What do you think he asked in exchange for me to stay there? To be his sex slave?" To say I was mortified was an understatement. "I don't even know his sexuality. I don't even care."
Small lie. I still thought that he maybe, possibly had a small crush on me. And the way he went out of his way to not say his crush's pronouns while his team questioned him about it... I couldn't say exactly that he was anything other than straight, but the signs were there.
"We're just saying," mom put his hand on my arm. "That it's okay to be excited."
"I'm not."
"We trust you, Mark. We know that you won't do anything stupid. Although if you want to, we can't stop you."
"Right now what I want is for you two leave me alone. Preferably for the next twenty years," I pushed my chair back as I stood up. "Nothing will happen between us, not even if he's gay or whatever. Stop. Never talk to me ever again."
My mom called after me as I walked towards my room. "Sorry honey," she offered an apologetic smile. "We didn't mean to upset you. We're just-"
"Excited, I know," I sighed. "But also overreacting. Do I look like someone who'll jump at a guy at the first chance he get?"
"Obviously not," dad said carefully. "At the same time, you never talked about any of your friends and now suddenly you have some best friend who lets you stay at his place. People your age usually keeps so much secrets, especially about lovers and such," he explained like I was some young, dumb kid who didn't understand how the world worked.
"He's not my lover," I repeated, feeling tired. "I just didn't thought it was important, I guess." Or I just didn't know him until a few weeks ago. Same thing.
"Everything is important when it comes to you," mom spoke softly, afraid I'd run away. "You know that, right?"
"Yeah, I know, I know. Just don't traumatize me again, please."
They shared a look and dad shrugged eventually. "Fair enough."
