Davis watched Emily hurriedly get out of bed and watched her as she went to the bathroom and turned on the shower. "Emily are you ok?" he asked softly through the door. She had slammed it hard when she went in.Emily did not say anything to him.
***
Emily looked in the mirror above the sink. She was shaking uncontrollably and was in pain. What in the fuck had just happened to her? How was it possible?
Emily did not want to see Davis now. She did not want to see anyone. Emily had to try to process this, but how? She shook her head. It was ludicrous! Emily had just been raped and by something that she could not see! By what? A ghost? A demon? She could see herself calling the police and saying, "Yes, I was raped tonight." The police officer would say."I'm sorry, ma'am," he would say it just like the actors say it on Law-and-Order Special Victims Unit and ask. "Who raped you?" with a somber tone, and then she would say,
"A ghost."
That would be it. They would think that she was crazy, and that would be that. Emily
would be hung up on.**********
She hit the sink with her palm open and tried to breathe as best as possible. Davis heard it. "Emily, please answer me, babe," he pleaded. Emily continued to ignore him. She got in the shower and let the hot water pour over her as she stood beneath the shower head. She grabbed the bottle of body wash and a washcloth and filled the washcloth with soapy liquid.
Emily scrubbed her body furiously and cleaned herself until she burned in her private parts. The water was so hot that her skin was bright red, but she could not get clean enough. Turning off the shower and feeling completely numb, Emily let the tub fill up with the hot water. Once it was full enough, she immersed herself in the water and dragged herself down, down, down until Emily submerged beneath the water. She heard nothing but the water roaring in her ears. All that she had been able to hear was that voice... that horrible, vile voice.Davis stood and waited for her to come out, and finally, after what seemed an excruciatingly long time, he heard the faucet turn off. He listened to the door unlock and open, and Emily walked out wrapped in a pristine white towel. She looked at him, and she smiled tremulously.
"Can you get my clothes, please?" Her voice was so soft. She walked over to the bed and sank on the mattress with weak knees. Davis grabbed a pair of panties, shirt, and leggings from her overnight bag and handed them to her.
Emily looked up at him and sighed raggedly. Davis was not sure how to react. He hurt. Davis physically ached for what she had just endured. He did the only thing that he could do. He held out his arms.
Emily looked at him for a few moments and sank gratefully into his arms, and he held her and rocked her.
"I'm sorry for blaming you," she whispered, clutching his shirt and burrowing her head in his chest.
Davis kissed the top of her head tenderly."Emily," he whispered hoarsely. Emily raised her head and looked at him.
"Can we not talk about it, please?" She begged softly.
Davis looked down at her and was at a loss for words. He spoke very gently."Emily, I am not sure how to..."Emily turned on him fiercely and roughly shoved him away from her.
"I said I do not want to fucking talk about it, Davis! That means shut the fuck up about it, and do not mention it to me again! It was a fucking ghost; it was not human! It has no bearing on me whatsoever!" Her eyes were so void of the light that was usually there. All that Davis saw was denial.
