Chapter 17

Present

Jasmine finished reading the last entry, and her face was sad. "This guy is just completely unreal. Juliette did everything she could to please him, and it is like he just threw it back in her face," she said. Willow nodded her head.

"I can see now why this ends up as horribly as it does. He was a monster to her. Calling her a whore. I wonder where he got his piss poor views on women?"
Luna sighed.

"Probably from his father, I would bet," she commented dryly. Jasmin turned to the next page, and her eyes narrowed.

"This is strange," she said quizzically. The team looked at her, and Bella spoke.

"What is strange?" Jasmine flipped through the pages and then stared at the group.

"Her diary entries run cold. There is not another entry until..." She turned the pages swiftly. "Until... January 2nd, 1940." Vivian sat up straighter and asked.

"I wonder why?" Rian shook her head and sighed.

"This is going down a very dark path very quickly," Rian said. "Juliette was usually writing in the diary at least every day or every other day, and then it just skips months. This is very strange indeed. I wonder what happened?" she questioned. "For there to be such an abrupt change of pace in her entries?" Bella looked at the group, and her face was hopeful as she said.

"Maybe she got pregnant?" Luna reached out and ruffled Bella on the top of her head.

"We can hope so... but I doubt it." Rian spoke up then.

"What if she did get pregnant and maybe had a miscarriage or something?" Jasmine looked at all of them.

"Or she just went out of the country like the wealthy tended to do back then. I mean..." she continued. "It was nothing for them to go to Europe for months on end back then, right?' Stephan cleared his throat and spoke.

"Absolutely. It could have very well been that ,young lady." Jasmine smiled at Stephan. She liked him. He was a real gentleman. She did not know his story but would love to hear it sometime. She bet that he had lived a remarkably interesting life. Vivian stood up then, ringing the pearls in her hands nervously.

"We need to listen to the EVPs and see what was captured on the recording." The team agreed with Vivian.

Davis went and removed the EVP monitors from the study downstairs, and then he went upstairs and gathered the EVPs from the main bedroom and the crying room. He stuffed them in his black backpack slung over his shoulder, then reached down and picked up the music box. Davis held it in his hands as he fought against the urge to cry. Slowly, he walked out of the room and out into the hallway. It was thick with shadows, and he wanted to enter the main bedroom. Davis felt like he should not, but he did it anyway.

Davis opened the double doors and made his way into the hushed master bedroom. He remembered the diary entries. Jackson and Juliette had been in this room and made love in this bed. He closed his eyes. Davis abruptly felt overwhelmed with fatigue, and he missed Emily so much that his chest ached with wanting her. He thought back to their time outside of the house and remembered being with her and looking deep into her eyes as he claimed her body for his own again.

He felt the urge to urinate, so he went to the bathroom and flipped the light switch. He used the bathroom and zipped up his jeans when the light went out. It blinked once... twice and then flickered back on.

Davis walked over to the sink to wash his hands. He turned the faucet on and splashed chilly water on his face. He grabbed a white hand towel and wiped his face. Davis bent over and closed his eyes. The light extinguished again, shrouding him in darkness. It was so black that he could not see his hand in front of his face.
