Chapter 6

"Can you show us where they are, Bella?" Vivian asked curiously.Bella nodded slowly.

"Yes," she replied.

Davis watched as Bella rose from her chair, and she, Clarrisa, and Vivian walked toward the staircase.
He did not want her to go into that room, especially with what had happened to Emily, but he knew he did not have a chance to argue with her.

When had Bella gained these special powers? Was it because of Penelope? Had she passed something on to her? The dead person spoke through his niece now? When he looked over and saw her eyes roll back in her head? That had terrified him to no end. He looked at her and watched her ascend the shadowed staircase, and she disappeared out of sight. He wanted to follow her but did not want to leave Emily's side. She was sitting on the sofa, looking at him, holding his hand.

"She will be okay, Davis. Vivian and Clarrisa will protect her," she said softly. Davis looked down at her. He hoped that she was right.

Bella led the women to the main bedroom, and they walked inside. The room was so cold. Vivian held an EVP recorder in her hand to be on the safe side. It was currently blinking red, so she felt that they were okay.
She watched the young girl walk over to the bedside table and lift the picture frame bizarrely. Bella lifted the latch, and the panel in the wall popped open slowly, with a creaking sound omitting from its hinges.
Bella opened the panel wider and knelt. She reached with her small arm into a space at the bottom. Bella looked at Vivian and Clarrisa. Her arm was not long enough to get the diaries. "I can't reach them."
Clarrisa's arms were slender and long.

"Let me try," she offered. Clarrisa walked over and knelt beside Bella. She used the flashlight on her phone and shone it into the small opening at the bottom of the panel. Clarrisa gasped. "I see them!" she said excitedly.

Bella moved aside, and Clarrisa reached in, put her fingertips out, and touched the cover. She leaned in further and felt the soft binding.

Clarrisa grasped the book and carefully pulled it out.
The book was navy blue velvet and the initials J. C. K were emblazoned across the front. The edges of the pages were gilded in silver. It was thick and tied together to prevent the book from opening, with a silver ribbon that was in remarkably perfect shape. The whole book was for that matter. It had been hidden in that dark panel for decades.

Clarrisa handed the book to Vivian's waiting hands, and Bella looked at it with wide pale eyes. She placed her hand back in the panel's opening and extracted another book, which was red velvet with gold-gilded pages. She handed this one to Bella. Bella held it close to her chest and then picked up and held the old diary to her nose. She sniffed it. "It smells so old."
Vivian looked down at her.

"It is Cherie. Very old." Clarrisa pulled out a third book, dark green velvet with silver gilded pages. She held onto that one.
Each of the diaries was monogrammed with the same initials.

Vivian, Bella, and Clarrisa walked away from the panel. They had left it open, and suddenly, it slammed shut behind them.
Vivian looked down at the EVP in her hand, which was erratically blinking yellow. Her eyes widened in excitement.
"Look!" She said and held it up for Clarrisa and Bella to see. It was flashing quickly. They were not alone. Suddenly, a loud, piercing moan and a blood-curdling scream rent through the air, traveling across the room, sending shivers down their spines. They could hear a pounding heartbeat in the room, which continued down the darkened hallway. The sound bouncing off the walls. The scream continued to the door where the apparition had appeared in the bedroom and stopped.
Vivian ran down the hallway and placed her hand on the knob. She turned it and opened the door. Vivian walked inside the space, but she heard and saw nothing. Whatever had made that sound was gone. Vivian glanced down at the EVP, and it was blinking red.
