Chapter 8

Clarrisa sighed and shook her head. "Juliette should have never married him. Jackson was bad news from the very start," she said, and the team agreed with her.

Emily stood up and walked away from the group into the kitchen. She could not explain it, but after hearing Luna read that diary entry, she discovered that Jackson had raped Juliette's best friend, Betty. She was overwhelmed with anger. Not fear. White hot anger.

Gretchen had returned to the house with the girls, sitting at the kitchen bar and listening to Luna read from the diaries. She was scrolling on her cell phone and put it down when she saw Emily approaching her.
She pushed a chair out for Emily with her foot."Cop a squat," Gretchen said softly. Emily sat down with a sigh. "I know that you are going through a lot right now with what happened last night, Emily, but look on the bright side, huh? He did not cut you up and scared you on the outside for all to see," she said, trying feebly at some humor. Emily glanced over at her and gave a small smile.

"You know what Gretchen?" Emily asked. Gretchen took a sip of Mountain Berry Gatorade from a bottle she had opened earlier.

"What?"

"Hearing what he did to Betty? To Juliette's best friend? It shows what a real bastard he was in life and what a bastard he continued to be and is in death. I can assure you that we are not his only victims, Gretchen. I would bet my life on it." Emily finished angrily. Gretchen nodded in affirmation.

"Yes. I would completely agree with you. Jackson has terrorized or assaulted every woman in this house through the decades."

"I am not scared of that piece of shit anymore!" Emily exclaimed. "I am furious. That's what I am!" Davis had looked for Emily, and when he heard her raised voice, he followed it and found her with Gretchen. He walked up behind Emily and placed his warm, big hands on her shoulders, lightly squeezing them.

"You okay, babe?" he asked with concern clear in his voice. Emily looked up at him and grabbed his hands slowly with her own, pressing his hands against her cheeks. She was grateful to have Davis by her side.

"I am furious, but I know this is a strange thing, what happened to me last night. I say that this piece of shit is nothing to me. He cannot control me if I do not let him." Gretchen looked at her and smiled.

"You are right about that." Bella walked into the kitchen and stood by Davis at that moment.

"Luna is getting ready to read some more from Juliette's diary," she announced.

Gretchen, Emily, and Davis joined the group in the living room, and the twin girls played on their iPads with headphones over their little ears. Gretchen wanted them to refrain from hearing the conversation.
Luna already had the diary open for the next entry and was waiting for everyone to settle down.
Once everyone had sat, she read ahead and looked up at the group. "Oh wow," she breathed. Willow spoke up where she sat on the middle of the sofa.

"What is it?" she asked curiously. Luna looked at her and shook her head.

"I'll just start reading."

April 4th, 1939
Betty came to my room this morning and begged to talk to me. I did not want to hear anything that she had to say, not one word, but she started crying, so I took pity on her. I needed to be focused. My lady will soon be here to do my makeup and hair for the ceremony. I do not need anything to frazzle my nerves today. I have no appetite. I am so nervous. It is my damn wedding day!
