I walked around the function hall in search of my best friend, Zahra. She was hosting her first small charity fundraiser for orphaned children and I'd been the one helping her plan everything out. Me and our other friends, of course.
But now that I'd arrived she was nowhere to be seen. I'd walked circles and circles around this place already and I'd called her multiple times. The hall was beautiful. Inside were tables and gorgeous decor, and outside was a pool and golf course.
As I admired the outside, a voice called from the other end of the patio. "Anaya!"
Noor. I realized immediately.
I went over to her, "I thought you weren't coming?" I asked her excitedly.
"I mean, I have a flight in 4 hours, and I might miss it and my mom might kill me but I mean-" she stopped her ramble when she saw my goofy smile, she had a bad habit of rambling when she was nervous, and right now she was nervous because of her flight. "How could I ever miss it?" She asked me back, taking my hands in hers.
"Have you seen Zahra?" I asked her.
"Just did." She replied with a nod. "She needed me to get some files from her car. There are so many guests here that she doesn't even have the time to breathe properly." We looked around, eyeing the people around us who radiated the vibe rich. Although we all grew up in this environment, there were some things around us that we'd never be used to, like that Indian woman across the pool who was wearing so much gold she could drown in it. God if Duha were here, she would scream at how horrendous of a fashion emergency that dress is. Duha Malik is our other best friend, a professional fashion designer, and the biggest hater of ugly dresses. Oh how I missed her right now.
I averted my attention from the horrific dress and looked back to Noor. "You have her keys?" I asked. She replied by dangling the Porsche keys in front of my face.
"I can go get it," I told her as I took them. There were way too many people here, a small errand would be a nice way to get some fresh air.
Before she could reply I was already walking away.
"Do you even know where her car is?" She called out. I turned around to reply, slightly jogging backwards.
"I'll figure it out!" I called back. I felt my heel press onto something squishy and my back hit a firm figure. I felt the warmth of skin touch my arms. Then I was falling.
"Anaya!" Noors voice called. Before I could even process what was happening the water enveloped me in. The cold rushed to me immediately. My heel hit the bottom of the pool and I used whatever strength I had to jerk my head out of the water gasping for breath. My hair covered my face and through the strands I saw a man in a wet black suit across from me. Anaya you stupid idiot!!!! I opened my mouth to frantically apologize feeling extremely guilty, but he beat me to it.
