"Madness and greatness are two sides of the same coin. Every time a Targaryen is born, the gods toss a coin in the air and the world holds its breath to see how it will land." — Queen Shaena I, the Moon Dragon (Reign: 200 AC to 267 AC)

The quote from one of the most beloved Targaryen monarchs became very infamous, with scholars and Maester's often using it to determine past rulers 'coins' landed on. Many have debated which side Queen Aelinor Targaryen, the First of Her Name, coin landed on. Some say greatness, her biggest critics claim madness, while some say both. — Excerpt from Targaryen History: Life and Reign of the White Queen by Professor Alyssa Snow.

Long disputed is how then Princess Aelinor and her first husband, Laenor Velaryon, had their four children: King Jacaerys I, the Just, Princess Valaena Velaryon, Lady of Hightide, Mistress of Driftmark, and Lady of the Tides, Prince Lucerys Velaryon, the Explorer, and Princess Alysanne Velaryon, who became her brother's Mistress of Whisperers. Laenor was long rumored to prefer men over woman, yet sired four legitimate children.

In 255 AC historians were finally allowed to see the love letters and notes between Laenor Velaryon and his life long companion, Joffrey Lonmouth, confirming them as lovers and making them symbols in the LGTBQ+ community, along with his youngest child Princess Alysanne, who was confirmed as lesbian and having a life long partnership and romance with Lady Serena Snow, her secretary.

One of most startling discoveries was one love note, written in 113 AC shortly after the announcement of Aelinor's betrothal to Laenor.

My dearest Joffrey

We are very lucky in this arrangement I have with my cousin. She has not only allowed us to continue our love but she has encouraged it, saying that we are lucky to have found 'our one true love'. You shall be made a household knight in our future household, allowing us to stay close without arousing suspicion. Do not worry, Joffrey, a stud is not needed since Aelinor and I know of ways to conceive true born children. She had a few minor requirements, such as me pulling my weight in raising our children—which I shall do, and I know you will make a lovely uncle. Mother and Father have furthered agreed to this, as had my treasured sister.

"As long as you two do not get caught, I will look the other way. Be happy, Laenor." my cousin said to me on our walk on the beach.

We are lucky, my love. So very lucky.

Love, your beloved sea star

Laenor Velaryon

This letter confirmed that Laenor was the biological father of King Jacaerys the Just, Princess Vaelaena Velaryon, Lady of the Tides, Lucerys the Explorer, and Princess Alysanne, one of the most successful Mistress of Whisperers in history. DNA testing in 505 AC further solidified the confirmation that all children Queen Aelinor had were the biological children of Laenor Velaryon.

But how the couple pulled this off remains a mystery lost to the fog of time.
