As everyone dispersed from their groups back into the building, I slowly lagged behind, not wanting to run into the gang again. I'd just made it in time for my next lesson and sat in the spare seat near the window.
"S'not like you to be late, Lester." One of the boys at the back called out, not in a mean way but more like a general statement. I shrugged it off and turned to look out of the window, watching the orange leaves flutter down from the branches and softly land on the grass. It's a beautiful sight, and highly underrated. Autumn is my favourite month, it's not too hot nor cold, and I like seeing the leaves spin around in the wind like mini tornados. I was torn away from my daydream as the teacher began handing out worksheets,
"Now, do you all understand what you need to do?" She asked, looking around the classroom before her eyes fixed onto me. I nodded awkwardly, I hadn't listened to a word she'd said and I didn't even know what we were doing until I looked down at the paper in front of me. I grabbed a pen from my bag and began on the work, trying to block out the thoughts of this morning's events from my mind. 'How could I be so stupid?' I thought to myself. I shook my head slightly, 'No. I didn't even say anything, it was PJ.' I soon had a balanced argument going on inside of my head.
The end of the lesson came quicker than expected. I swiftly packed my things away and started to walk away when my teacher spoke up, "Phil, could you stay behind for a few minutes?" She mumbled as the rest of the pupils left. I nodded, confused, as I walked towards her desk. "I've noticed you," She paused for a few seconds, thinking of the right word, "..zoned out quite a lot this lesson. That's not like you, is everything okay?"
"Yep," I muttered, shooting a quick smile at her. "Everything's fine. I'm just a bit...tired."
She nodded, "All right, if you're sure." She said in slight disbelief. "If you're worried about anything, you can talk to me."
"Thank you," I whispered before leaving the classroom, walking towards the canteen. I wasn't hungry, and the smell of the food made me want to vomit. I quickly passed through and immediately walked outside, needing some air. I slowly padded across the field, the leaves crunching beneath my feet, everybody was eating indoors so I had the whole playground to myself. I kicked some of the leaves up and watched them gracefully float back down again before hearing a familiar voice behind me.
"Hey," Dan said half-heartedly. Oh no.
"What do you want?" I muttered to him, not turning around.
"No need to be rude," He replied bluntly.
"You didn't answer," I shrugged, wondering why I was even acting this confident.
"Mr Howard said we need to work together for our Science project." Dan frowned, "His idea, not mine. We aren't even in the same Science group, but our class has odd numbers and you don't have a partner."
I felt my heart drop, "What do we have to do?" I asked with a sigh, Dan hated me and I knew it.
"I thought you listened in class." Dan raised an eyebrow, still slowly walking behind me. "But I'll remind you, I guess. We have to design something to do with science." Surprisingly, he didn't mention what happened earlier. I nodded, "You can leave now." I said bitterly.
