"Can I have everyone's attention? Quiet please," Beyoncé said to her class after they'd gotten rowdy in the middle of her lesson.
They soon quieted themselves and let Beyoncé get back to teaching.
"Alright, and this is a half note, and it gets how many beats?" Beyoncé continued as she pointed to a half note on the board.
"Two!" they all said.
"Very good, what kind of rest is this?" she asked as she pointed to a whole rest on her board.
"Whole," they all said.
"And how many beats does it get?" she asked.
"Four," they all replied.
"Very good. So I need you guys to pass around these sheets, and I want us to clap out the rhythm on the first staff together," she told her class as she passed around a worksheet with multiple different staffs of music.
She continued her lesson once she saw that all her students had a sheet.
"You guys ready? Let's take it slow. Here's your tempo. Clap on the beats. Quiet on the rests. Let's go," she said before the class started to clap out the rhythm.
They did a decent job, but Beyoncé thought it could be better.
"Okay guys. That was pretty good. Let's try it again though. I think we can do better. Do it without me. I'm gonna keep your tempo. Pay attention to the rests," she told them as they were about to repeat the exercise.
As they were starting, her phone rang.
"Hold on guys," she said as she went to her desk to check her phone.
It was Jay. She answered the phone to prevent it from going to voicemail.
"Give me one second guys. Practice that staff again. I want to hear it when I come back. I'm right outside, and I'll be watching you guys," she said as she made her way out of her classroom.
She went into the hallway and closed the door behind her, making sure to keep an on them through the window in her door. She put the phone to her ear.
"Hey baby," she smiled.
"Hey ma, how's it going? You having a good day?" Jay asked her.
"It's alright. I'm tired. These children are wearing me out," she told him.
Instead of giving piano lessons, she was teaching at the Summer Arts Conservatory the school was hosting for children 9-15.
She had gotten the call Saturday while she was in Hawaii with Jay and started working Monday.
One of the school's successful alumni was supposed to teach the musical theatre and music theory classes, but after that person got the chance to play with Los Angeles Philharmonic, they had to drop out.
