Dismissal time had arrived, and the school was abuzz with students eager to share the news about the upcoming recognition day with their families.
Yoko, feeling a mix of excitement and pride, quickly packed her backpack and made her way to Ms. Faye's classroom.
"See you tomorrow, Ms. Faye," Yoko said, giving her a quick hug. Ms. Faye smiled warmly, "Take care, Yoko."
Yoko headed to the parking lot where her family's car awaited her. As she approached the car, she texted her driver, informing him that she was on her way.
Moments later, she was seated in the backseat, her thoughts drifting to the recognition day and how she would share the news with her family.
Upon arriving home, Yoko was greeted by an unusual silence. Her family was seated of the couch, their expression tense and unspeaking.
Yoko hesitated for a moment before breaking the silence. "Why are you guys so quiet?" She asked, her voice tinged with curiosity and concern.
Before she could finish her question, her father cut her off abruptly. "What the hell are you thinking, Yoko?!"
Yoko was taken aback by his outburst. "What?" She asked, confusion evident in her voice. Her father stood up and handed her a brown envelope.
With trembling hands, Yoko opened it, revealing photographs of her and Ms. Faye together last night, clearly indicating their relationship.
"What are you thinking?! I already told you that you cannot be a lesbian!" Her father shouted, his face flushed with anger.
Yoko's stepmother, who had been silent until now, joined in. "So you're going to lie about this to us?"
Yoko, feeling a surge of defiance, retorted, "Don't you dare talk to me like that! You're not my real mother! You don't know who I am!"
Her father's grip on her hand tightened, his anger palpable. "We will report this tomorrow at your school, and cut your connections with Faye, or else we'll go back to America!"
Her father and stepmother stormed off to their room, leaving Yoko standing in the living room, her emotions a whirlwind.
Yuki, her stepsister, remained on the couch, casually playing with her phone. "What the hell is your problem?!" Yoko yelled at her, snatching the phone out of her hands.
Yuki smirked, unbothered by Yoko's anger. "Oops, sorry. I never expected that my little sister has mommy issues. So what happened between you and Ms. Faye last night? Did you guys had s-"
Before Yuki could finish her sentence, Yoko slapped her, the sound echoing in the quiet house. "I hate you!" Yoko spat, throwing Yuki's phone onto the couch before storming off to her room.
She slammed the door shut and locked it, her body trembling with rage and frustration. She immediately grabbed her phone and began typing a message to Ms. Faye, her fingers flying over the keys.
"My parents found out about us. They know everything. I don't know what to do. Please, Faye, we need to talk."
Yoko spent the message and waited anxiously, staring at the screen for a any sign of a reply. Ms. Faye was online, but the message remained unread.
Minutes stretched into an hour, and still, there was no response.
Faye knew about the situation but had decided not to acknowledge Yoko's messages, fearing the repercussions and unsure of how to proceed.
She felt a mix of fear and confusion, torn between her feelings for Yoko and the potential fallout from their relationship being exposed.
By 11 PM, Yoko's anxiety had reached its peak. She called Ms. Faye, her hands shaking as she held the phone to her ear. The call went unanswered, and each ring felt like a dagger to her heart.
