Chapter Four
in the wake of loss❝ some memories never leave your bones,
like salt in the sea; they become part of you. ❞I watched Steve leave in a hurry, a look of distress etched on his face. The weight of the Sokovia Accords hung over us, the tension in the room thick enough to cut with a knife. Everyone was lost in their own thoughts, grappling with the implications of what had just been said.
I needed to find Steve. He had left so abruptly, and I knew something was wrong. I turned to Wanda, who stood silently, her eyes reflecting a mix of confusion and sorrow. I placed a hand on her shoulder, giving it a gentle squeeze.
"I need to go find Steve," I said softly. "Will you be okay?"
She nodded, though her eyes told a different story. I gave her a reassuring smile before quickly making my way out of the room, pulling out my phone to call Steve. The line rang, but there was no answer. I tried again, but it went straight to voicemail. My concern grew with each unanswered call.
As I headed toward the exit, I heard someone call my name. Turning around, I saw Tony and Rhodes approaching me, determination in their eyes.
"Levi, wait up," Tony said, his tone serious. "Little prince, we need to talk."
I hesitated, my mind racing with worry for Steve, but I knew I couldn't just ignore them. "What is it?" I asked, trying to keep my voice steady.
"We need to discuss the Accords," Rhodes said. "This is important, and we need everyone on board."
I sighed, running a hand through my hair. "I know it's important, but right now, I need to find Steve. He just left, and something's wrong."
"Little prince, we understand your concern," Tony said, his expression softening slightly. "But this is bigger than any one of us. The Accords are about ensuring accountability and preventing future casualties. You saw what happened in Sokovia."
His words hit home, the memory of the destruction and loss in Sokovia fresh in my mind. I felt torn, the weight of the decision pressing down on me. I had seen firsthand the consequences of our actions, and the innocent lives lost. But signing the Accords felt like surrendering our autonomy, giving up the very thing that allowed us to act when needed.
"I get it, Anthony. I really do," I said, my voice heavy with conflict. "But I'm not sure if signing away our right to choose is the answer. What if we need to act and they don't let us?"
"That's exactly what we're trying to prevent," Rhodes said firmly. "We need to work within the system to make sure it works for us, not against us."
