NEVER in my life do I ever want to be in the same situation as I currently am right now. The deafening silence and awkwardness is making my skin crawl. For the first time since I joined SHIELD I am not the reason for all of this tension. The source of it however is sitting on either side of me. Steve Rogers and Natasha Romanoff both thought that it would be a great idea to sandwich me as we fly back to HQ.

Rumlow, the asshole that he is, isn't helping my situation at all. He's been giving me heated glares ever since we returned back to the quinjet. I sincerely hope to never be in this kind of situation ever again.

Not gonna lie, there's a big part of me that wants to ask the two Avengers what happened in the short amount of time they were together during the mission. However, I do know that I would be crossing the line that no one in their right mind should if I did that. Instead, I decided to shut my mouth the whole ride.

As the quinjet landed, I immediately stood up and just settled on patting Steve's shoulder and waved Natashia before leaving. I rush out of the quinjet, making sure to not run into a certain team leader and get into a heated argument that I'm not really in the mood to put myself in.

Instead, I went straight to the parking lot and got inside of my old beaten jeep. "What a close call." I mumbled to myself before starting the engine and pulling out of the parking lot, driving away from the headquarters and towards my apartment. Hill will certainly call me if they need me anyway, so there's really no reason for me to stay at the HQ. The wheezing engine of my jeep made me frown, reminding me of the bad state she's in. Bella, as I'd like to call this ancient jeep of mine, was a gift from Nat and Clint, a sort of reward for accomplishing my first mission a few years ago. She's not that great, but she's special.

After a few minutes of cursing at reckless drivers and avoiding traffic through shortcuts that I was able to find and fit Bella, I finally arrived and parked beside my small yet decent enough apartment complex. I hopped out of Bella and made sure to lock the doors, you can never be too sure in this neighborhood after all.

I normally would just change my clothes and call it a day whenever I get back from a mission. However, as I put my stuff down, I decided to settle for a relaxing bath while listening to my favorite jazz music.

I then decided to catch up on some of my favorite shows, fully giving myself a relaxing day. Planning to end the day with a cup of warm tea and a good book. Yes, I finally decided to give myself a relaxing day that my body has been begging me for.

I didn't even realize that my phone had been ringing for a good amount of time until I decided to grab it from my nightstand to add a movie to the list I was preparing for Steve.

A frown immediately took place on my face when I saw a series of missed calls from Natashia, Steve, and Hill. However, what completely took me off guard was the single and unusual missed call from my own director. Nick Fury never, for the life of God, contacts me. The SHIELD director usually sends Hill or Romanoff to do that. That is why I'm absolutely confused as to why Fury decided to call me now.

"This day is getting more and more confusing." I mumbled to myself before deciding to finally return Hill's call, knowing that it's mostly urgent seeing as she only calls me when it's about a mission on a private job for me as a hacker. It took a few rings before the other line finally accepted my call.

"Hello? Hill?" I asked, hearing rushed footsteps on the other line. "Anderson, where are you?" Her loud and rushed voice immediately gives me the idea that whatever the reason she called me was entirely serious. In fact, I didn't even waste any time and grab a pair of clean black jeans and a decent shirt I could easily put my hand while trying to hold my phone. "Something happened and Director Fury's in the hospital right now. You better be moving your ass to head here now, Anderson." Hill didn't wait for my answer and ended the phone call. However, I really didn't even need to hear anything more. As soon as I heard the word hospital and Fury, I was already rushing out of my apartment, taking the stairs while putting on my jean jacket.

---

It only took a quick five minutes for me to arrive at the hospital where SHIELD sends their injured agents at. I don't even know how it took that easily for me to make my way here, but my panicked and concerned state couldn't care less. As soon as I arrived, I saw Rumlow and his annoying ass by the entrance. Surprisingly, though, he didn't stop me and only pointed towards the emergency room where I found Steve, Romanoff, and Hill standing by the glass window where they all watched Fury, struggling to fight for his life. A number of doctors and nurses surrounded his badly beaten body.

"Anderson." It was Hill who saw me first, earning the attention of the two Avengers. "What happened to him?" I didn't spare any glance at any of them as I walked towards their position, my eyes glued to Fury. Steve was the one to answer me, telling me how he found Fury in his apartment and discreetly told him that someone's chasing him and how seconds after he was shot multiple times.

With a frown, I furrowed my eyebrows and nodded my head in understanding. I will surely have to make my own investigation as to what happened. Our attention was captured by the rushed and tense movement happening inside as the doctors tried their best to revive the dying director. I placed a hand on the glass window as I tried to keep myself from breaking down.

"Come on, Fury." I whispered again and again, I didn't even notice the tears that started to stain my cheeks. Steve moved to stand beside me, I can feel his eyes on me yet I never did once take my attention away from Fury. However, as soon as the doctors gave up and announced Fury's time of death, my knees buckled and I almost dropped down to the floor but was caught by Steve. Tears rushed down my face as I silently cried for the remaining father figure I have to wake up and not leave me like my parents did.

Nick Fury stood as my father ever since I lost my parents from a secret mission they were sent to do. As my godfather and my parents' boss, Fury made sure to do his best to provide everything I need. He's the only family I have and now he's gone.

I noticed Maria moved, slowly heading towards the emergency room to Fury's dead body after telling that she will be the one to take care of Fury and his funeral. "Hill." I called out to her, my voice uncharastically cold and that made her stop in her tracks. She then turned her head and looked at me. "Yeah?"

"Find out who did this to him. I need them, dead or alive."
