"Took you long enough"

Kai watched her every step from the second she walked into the room with a smile. Madelene did not spare him a glance, walking past the couch he was sitting on and towards the kitchen.

She opened the fridge and looked through the empty shelves under the flickering light, she slammed the door shut and jumped when Kai was standing right behind them leaning against a cabinet.

"I can make you something to eat." he offered.

"No" she answered quietly before moving out of the kitchen, purposely going around the kitchen island instead of past him to create distance.

"You seem awfully moody today" he followed behind like a lost puppy.

"I'm not" was all she gave him.

"Cheer up! We are going home" His smile was genuine as he placed both his hands on her shoulders and squeezed them reassuringly.

Madelene hated herself at that very moment, she was lying to him, and she wasn't a very good liar. Truth be told she didn't know why the second she left the Salvatore house she rushed to the spot she knew he would be at, she was right of course. She knew Kai like the back of her hand, she knew him longer than she didn't at that point. She knew all his tricks and where he would stay if he had to.

Bonnie and Damon only had one shot at escaping with her help, and after it will happen, she had to have her own escape plan. Maybe Hawaii.

The moment he finds out she betrayed him, all hell will break loose, she ́ll be on a run like she never was before, more scared than ever. Somehow that still felt better and more morally right than letting him out into the world where people that his actions affected are still living.

She thought of Josette, Rosemary, and Joshua Parker and how they were the only living members of his family, and how he would go after them, it was still not too late for the merge, even if Josette was somewhere out there already in her forties, probably a doctor with a husband and kids like she always wanted.

"I'm gonna go to sleep now" she stated before taking Kai's hands off her shoulders.

"C'mon Maddie, this might be our last night here, like ever" his voice was low as his hand wrapped around her wrist gently "Let's spend it together, no drama, no dying, we can just have a good night before the big day, like back in the day, before all this"

Madelene hesitated, feeling the weight of his hand on her wrist. She couldn't deny that part of her wanted to spend this night with him, just one last night without the chaos and fear that had defined so much of their time together. But the guilt gnawed at her, a constant reminder of what she had done and what she was about to do. Truth be told, maybe she owed him one good day before ruining all his hope and dreams, and maybe she owned herself one too before their lives dissolved into terrible chaos again.

It could be nice, to play pretend for one night, forget everything that happened between them, just for a few hours.

"Okay," she finally said, her voice barely above a whisper.

Kai's face lit up with a genuine smile, and for a moment, she could already forget everything. Almost.

"Great! Let's make the most of it," he said, his enthusiasm contagious. " There's some nice booze in the kitchen."

Hours later, Madelene sat on the floor with her back pressed against the couch with a bottle of flavored gin in her hand, while Kai spread over the entirety of the sofa, his fingers gently brushing at strands of her hair while they shared the bottle back and forth.
