Ya Mariya arrived home, devastated by the situation her sister was in. Mama and Baba were in the dining area, while Layla, Amal, and Muhammad were watching a cartoon on their tablet. She walked in quietly, "Salamu alaikum," she said in a very low tone and headed straight to a single-seater couch. Muhammad was the only one who noticed her.
"Ammi, you are back. Where is my mom? Is she with you?" Muhammad asked, running outside to see if they were together.
"Layla, go and play in the garden with Muhammad. I need to speak with Mama and Baba," Ya Mariya instructed.
"Okay, Ammi," Layla replied, taking Amal's hand and heading to the garden.
Mama, now worried about the look on Ya Mariya's face, asked, "What happened? Where is Asiya?"
The sob Ya Mariya had been trying to control broke out. "Mama, wallahi mun cutar da Asiya," she cried.
Baba, who had just taken a morsel from his plate, dropped his spoon and gave his full attention to Ya Mariya. Mama kept asking what had happened to her daughter, but Ya Mariya was crying too hard to answer.
"Mariya, ina diyata take? Qara dukanta yayi?" Mama's voice was filled with anxiety.
You could see the shock in Baba's eyes as Ya Mariya struggled to speak through her sobs. "Mama, ko tashi bata iyawa. Seda megadi ya tayani basata mota," Ya Mariya said, her voice breaking.
Mama's face turned pale, her hands trembling. "Mariya, bangane ya bugeta harta kasa tashi ba ina Asiya kimun magana?
"What have we done to Asiya? How could we let this happen?" Mariya cries
Baba, visibly shaken, stood up, pacing back and forth. "Muhsin dinne yasa hannu ya dukan mun yarinya?"
Ya Mariya wiped her tears, trying to compose herself. "Baba aiko wata batayi ba yafara bugunta, constant abuse kuma saboda tsaban beso asirinshi ya tonu gidan da take ciki ne bar inshi se yakai 4 betashi ba ko shekaran jia karfe biyar naje gidan yana barci a couch. His guest house are like hotels baba he is a total monster. Apart from that asiya is facing constant troll from girls on social media being unfit for him. And you too baba you don't even answer her greetings Asiya has endured all this so you dont get angrier, and baba they were not lying five years ago when they said nothing happened they where young and stupid but basu watsar da kansu ba."
Baba listens to Mariya without a word he knew he has made a grave mistake "he remembered how the boy cries and begged him but he refused that buy would have never treated Asiya like that."
"Take me to her now Zainabu, babu kowa gidan kitsaya dayaran inna dawo se kuje," he said to Mama.
"Toh," Mama replied, wiping away her tears.
Ya Mariya drove Baba to Cedar Crest Hospital Apo where Asiya is. She parked and came out of the car. Baba also came out. They were walking towards the entrance when Ibrahim and his mom, who came for her check-up, were on their way out.
"Ya Mariya, ina yini? Baba, ina yini?" he greeted. "Lafiya lau," they answered together.
"It's Asiya's family," he let his mom know.
"Okay," Mom said, clearly still angry about what happened. She really liked Asiya, she still does, but her family almost ruined her son's life; she can't forgive them for that.
Baba, who had recognized Ibrahim, felt a sense of shame and guilt all over.
"Ina yini?" Ya Mariya greeted Mom.
"Lafiya lau," her face not smiling.
"Waye ba lafiya?" Ibrahim asked.
Ya Mariya was silent for some seconds before she replied, "Asiya ce wallahi amma dasauki."
Ibrahim felt a knot in his chest. He had seen her not long ago, and now she was in the hospital. What happened? He started bombarding them with questions. "What's wrong with her? What happened? Can we see her?" he asked all at once.
Mom grabbed his hand, trying to comfort him and reminded him that Asiya is still married. She could feel his pulse, so fast.
"Lafiya lau," Baba said, walking in, and they all followed. Ya Mariya led the way to her room. Asiya was sleeping when they got in.
"Innalillahi wa inna ilaihi rajiun, he had an accident? Ya rabbi, I shouldn't have followed her; I caused this," Ibrahim said as tears rolled down his cheek.
Mom was also shocked at Asiya's condition and what her son just said.
"It's not you; her husband did this to her," Ya Mariya said.
"Whaat?" Mom and Ibrahim said together.
"He did this to her. I'm going to kill that bastard," his mom, Ya Mariya, and Baba held him, but he was shaking with anger, and his tears were still rolling.
"It's my fault," Baba said. It was the first thing he had said since they walked into the room. "I'm going to fix this. He dared to hit the daughter of the Chief Judge. I need a moment alone with my daughter, please." They all headed out. He sat by the chair close to her and cried his eyes out, then took out his phone and took pictures of her wounds.
He came out and made calls to send court orders to Muhsin. He is being sued for domestic violence. He left the hospital in Mariya's car, calling Farha to come and take their mom to the hospital as it was already late, and she couldn't drive at night. He would stay with the kids.
Mom had tried all she could to get Ibrahim to come home, reminding him that Asiya is married and he can't be seen near her. Ibrahim found a seat in the lobby and sat. Mom had to leave him there.
