chapter nineteen
paper cuts and bullet holes
Seven days. Seven days since Blake had broken up with Ethan. Seven days since Mark Sloan. Seven days since her mother had come into her life. And most agonizingly, seven days since George last spoke to her.
The weight of each passing day pressed down on Blake as she shuffled down the hallway with her friends. Their chatter, usually a welcome distraction, seemed to mock her reality. A week. Seven times 24 hours. Enough time for wounds to heal, apologies to be offered, forgiveness to be sought. Yet, the space between her and George couldn't be farther apart.
"What happened to George's hair? Is he having a nervous breakdown?" Izzie blurted, her voice laced with concern as they watched George walk with Bailey. His once neatly cropped hair was now a mess of uneven choppy layers like he had cut it on a whim.
"Burke says he's got 'issues,'" Cristina answered, her tone clipped. Another consequence of time. Seven days of George crashing on her and Burke's couch. "Uh, you should see them together. They're, like, doing things, like running...and cooking, and talking. They're, like, bonding."
"And you're afraid that Burke will realize he makes a better girlfriend than you?" Izzie teased.
Cristina ignored the jab, changing the conversation slightly. "You know, Blake, just go and make up with him." Blake shot her an annoyed look. "I didn't say sleep with him. Just be friends again."
"I've tried," Blake defended, her voice strained. "He says he needs time."
"How much more time does he need? It's been a week?" Meredith chimed in, a bit exasperated by the situation.
"Blake, you should try again," Izzie urged, trying to motivate her. "Things can't stay like this. They suck like this."
Just then, Alex rounded the corner, his arrival barely registering in Blake's mind. "What's up with O'Malley's hair? He looks like a hobbit."
