chapter twenty one
damage case
Stepping out of the ER, Blake cinched the tie on her gown and headed for the ambulance bay. A familiar scene greeted her—Meredith and Cristina leaning nonchalantly against the wall, Alex brooding a few feet away.
"You look mad," Blake whispered, sidling up to Alex and pulling on her gloves.
He shot her a fleeting glance before offering an unconvincing, "I'm fine."
"Girl problems?" She pressed, a knowing glint in her eye.
Alex rolled his eyes, muttering a disgruntled, "Shut up."
"Ooh," Blake smirked. "Definitely girl problems."
The ER doors opened again and George walked out along with Izzie, who looked like she was on a rampage. "She peed. Naked peeing. Callie crosses the line, George. So crossed the line. So freaking crossed."
Meredith and Cristina exchanged a silent glance, eyebrows raised in amusement.
"Oh," Alex chuckled weakly, "We're still pretending that you're not seeing a patient, right?" His voice trailed off as Izzie shot him a withering glare.
Blake, unable to contain herself, burst into laughter, the sound echoing in the otherwise silent bay. Izzie's glare promptly shifted targets, landing squarely on the brunette.
Cristina chose that moment to intervene. With a dramatic flourish, she stepped between Alex and Izzie, wrapping an arm around each of them "People, what's with all the evil misery, huh? Live and let live."
Confused stares met her pronouncement. George, brows furrowed, reached out and touched her face. "You're cheerful?" He questioned cautiously.
Blake, mirroring George's concern, stepped forward and turned Cristina's face toward her. A closer look confirmed the impossible—Cristina Yang, the resident cynic, was beaming. Unable to contain her curiosity, Blake raised a hand and delivered a light slap to Cristina's cheek.
