Minji
It's late at night and I insisted to dad that I need to complete some important documents, so I'll be staying late. Both my parents sounded like I was going off to war, and to be honest, I didn't blame them. After all, there is an assassin going after me. But still, I have a job, if I don't do it, it's not going to get done.
My eyes were begging to close and I was struggling to fight off a headache. My computer screen felt like it was brighter than the sun for some reason, and it was annoying me to pieces. I looked up to give myself a break, and I suddenly felt like I was under scrutiny when I caught sight of two of the many body guards dad hired for me in a flurry of worry.
It's not like they were looking at me, they were busy with whatever video game they were playing on the old TV that just happened to be in my office and decided to make themselves at home with it, I still felt like my privacy was being invaded.
Nevertheless, it's good I've become friendly with them now so it's less awkward. As I looked back to my computer, stretching my cramping fingers, my phone suddenly started vibrating. I tiredly forced myself to look at the contact name and when I saw it was Hanni, a mix of unease and happiness flooded through me.
She's been so distant lately, and I couldn't tell whether it was her duties as a lawyer that kept her busy or she was purposefully avoiding me, but I really missed her. Then again, I doubt she's calling because she missed me, she's probably calling for work purposes. What am I thinking? Of course that's what she'd be calling for.
"Minji, aren't you going to answer that?" one of the body guards, Heeseung asked, nodding towards my screaming phone.
I snapped out of my thoughts and swiped the green button, my heart knocking at my chest as I waited to hear her soft and sweet voice that comforted me everyday, well not anymore, but it used to.
"Minji, please don't tell me you're still at your office!" her panicked voice filled the room, causing both Heeseung and the other body guard, Ni-ki to turn their attention towards me. I felt dread shoot through my whole body like an arrow to a target. Why was she so panicked?
"Um...what if I said I am?" I shakily replied, forcing a chuckle to ease the tension.
There was silence as I heard the familiar sounds of cars, chatter, her ragged breathing and hurried footsteps along the pavement.
"Hanni?" I called out again. Heeseung and Ni-ki were now on guard, their hands clenched over their guns hidden in their suit jackets as their eyes diligently scanned their surroundings. I looked out the window, half expecting to see a shadowy figure, but there was no one.
Hanni still hadn't said anything yet, and I was starting to lose my mind. What the fuck was happening??
"GET THE FUCK OUT OF THERE NOW!!" she suddenly screamed into the phone, her voice filled with desperation and pure agony. I never knew Pham Hanni could sound so full of emotion, and it really caught me off guard. I should be feeling terrified out of my wits, but instead I'm feeling warm. She must really care about me....Fuck Kim Minji, now's not the time.
I quickly got up, startling Ni-ki and Heeseung. I barged out the door, gesturing for them to follow me. I practically flew down the stairs as though I was being chased by a hangry bear that hadn't eaten for days. I didn't know what was happening, but Hanni sounding like that could only mean it was something bad.
When I finally exited the building, the rest of the body guards stationed outside immediately were on my heels. It felt suffocating and all I wanted was answers...and perhaps to see Hanni again.
"I'm out, what's happening Han?" I urgently questioned, my hand shaking.
"Get away from the building Minji! Please I can't lose you too!!" she didn't seem any calmer even after my exit. Just how many people did she lose? She sounded like her heart was being torn into millions of unrecoverable pieces.
