The memory of your encounter with Suguru lingered as you unlocked your apartment door, but the scene unfolded before you was anything but welcoming. Toji was shirtless on the couch, with a half-naked woman straddling on his lap.
They both looked up at the sound of the door, and the woman's gaze swept over you from head to toe.
"Hey, Buttercup." Toji greeted you nonchalantly. "Where have you been?"
Brushing off his words, you stormed past them into your room, slamming the door shut behind you. Your anger simmered, the combination of Toji's disrespectful attitude and Suguru's heartfelt apology weighing heavily on your mind.
You collapsed onto your bed, burying your face into your pillow. As you tried to process everything, your mind drifted back to the case, seeking solace in work. Yet, your thoughts were too scattered to focus.
As you lay there, your thoughts wandered to the 'what-ifs'. If Suguru had been braver, would you still be together? Would the pull of your connection have been enough to surpass the obstacles in your way? Or had things run their natural course, leading you both to new paths and lessons to learn?
Perhaps, the universe had a hand in guiding you to where you were now. Maybe, you and Suguru were never meant to be, despite the love you shared. The distance and growth you both experienced allowed you to become better individuals.
However, the thought of what could have 'been' left a small ache in your heart, a lingering reminder of the love you had for each other in the past. In the end, you chose to be grateful for the memories and the friendship that still remained. Suguru's apology had brought closure, and that was enough.

Exhaustion finally won out, and you drifted off to sleep. Morning came sooner than expected, and you found yourself stirring under the covers. You crawled out of bed, grabbing your towel from the chair and wandered into the kitchen to start your morning routine.
Toji was already there, eating his cereal, the spoon clinking against the bowl. He looked up with a grin forming on his face. "Good morning, Buttercup. Did you sleep well?"
You ignored him, rummaging through the fridge for something to eat.
"You were gone for quite a while last night." he continued, seemingly unfazed by your lack of response.
Without turning around, you pulled out a biscuit and took a seat at the table.
"So, did you find any leads on that case?" he probed further.
You took a bite of the biscuit, avoiding eye contact.
Toji's brow furrowed, clearly not used to such cold behavior from you. "Come on, Don't be like that."
You opened your phone, staring at the screen, and muffled a laugh after reading your colleague's message. You stood, wiping the crumbs away from your lips. With that, you sauntered into the bathroom, closing the door behind you. As you changed into your work clothes, you couldn't shake the feeling of annoyance towards Toji. Eight months of living with him, and his habits hadn't changed one bit.
You stepped outside, making your way to the street, where Toji waited with his car. He waved you over, but you ignored him, continuing to walk as if he didn't exist.
"Hey! Buttercup, wait up!"
You kept walking, ignoring his presence.
"C'mon, Y/N. I'll give you a ride. It'll save you some time on the streets." Toji tried once more.
You reached into your pocket, pulling out your earphones, and plugged them into your ears, cranking up the volume as you listened to your favorite music.
