Toji returned exactly ten minutes later, carrying a small bag with him. "You're dressed already?" he asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Yeah, I didn't want to stay naked all night you know." you replied, your voice still weak but your spirits slightly lifted. Toji chuckled, walking over to the bed and placing the bag on the nightstand. He pulled out a capsule of tylenol and a glass of water, handing them to you.
"Here, take this first." he said, his voice soft. You took the medicine, downing it in one gulp. Toji watched you, a thoughtful expression on his face. "I'm gonna make you some chicken soup." he said suddenly, turning to leave the room.
You blinked in surprise, looking after him. "You don't have to do that, Toji." you called out. "I can just eat something later."
Toji paused, looking back at you. "I want to." he said simply, before disappearing into the kitchen.
As you listened to him clanging around in the kitchen, you couldn't help but wonder why he was doing all of this for you. He had never been this...nice before. It was almost unnerving. You shook your head, trying to clear your thoughts. Maybe he was just feeling guilty for what he said to you a few days ago.
[Meanwhile]
Toji stood in the kitchen, surrounded by a chaos of pots, pans, and ingredients he barely recognized. He had never cooked something like this in his life, but here he was, trying to make chicken soup for you. He grabbed a chicken breast, holding it up and examining it like it was a foreign object. "Okay..." he muttered to himself, "You can do this. It's just chicken. How hard can it be?" He dropped it into a pot with a clang, adding water and turning on the stove.
He watched as the water began to boil, then suddenly realized he had no idea what to do next. "Shit, shit, shit." he chanted, frantically searching through the cabinets for anything that might help. He found a can of chicken broth and dumped it in, then added some carrots and celery because he remembered seeing that in a TV show once.
"There." he said, satisfied with his progress. "Now what?" He scratched his head, looking around the kitchen. "Why the fuck did I tell her I was making chicken soup? I don't know how to make chicken soup. I don't even know what a real chicken soup is supposed to taste like. Fuck, I'm gonna mess this up!"
Toji did his best to make the soup taste as delicious as possible, adding a generous amount of salt, pepper, and some herbs he found in the pantry. He didn't know if it was the right combination, but he hoped it would do. He tasted it, winced at the saltiness, and quickly spit it out. "Shit, this is too salty. But I guess it's better than nothing." he muttered to himself, ladling some soup into a bowl, and carrying it back to your bedroom.
He handed you the bowl, his eyes darting to yours, waiting for your reaction. "Here you go. I...I didn't know what to do, so I just did what I thought was right. But I'm sure it's not that good." he said sheepishly, already preparing for the insults.
You took a spoonful of the soup, your eyes widening in surprise. "Toji, this is actually really good." you said, a smile tugging at the corner of your lips. "It's tasty." you added, taking another spoonful.
Toji's eyes widened in disbelief. "You're not going to insult me? You're not going to tell me how disgusting it is?" he asked, looking at you skeptical. "Does your tongue not working or something? I was expecting you to tell me how horrible it is."
You chuckled, taking another spoonful. "Well, I mean, it's not perfect, but it's better than nothing. And you went out of your way to make this for me, so I'm not going to insult it. It's actually a nice gesture." you said, taking a sip of water to cleanse your palate. "Thank you, Toji."
