Soshiro sifted through the stack of files on his desk, meticulously reviewing the academic and work histories of each applicant. When he reached your file, he paused.
Your profile picture caught his eye first. There was something about your face that stirred a sense of familiarity within him, a vague feeling of déjà vu that piqued his curiosity.
Soshiro skimmed through the details of your work history. It was sparse, listing only your employment with a Kaiju clean-up company and instructor of using blades in a small organisation nearby Tokyo. There was no mention of any formal education or school affiliations.
"That's odd," he muttered under his breath.
Intrigued, he reached for Kafka Hibino's file to compare. Kafka's file was more comprehensive, detailing his academic background alongside his work history.
Soshiro then turned to your essay, scrutinizing it with a discerning eye. As he read, his initial curiosity grew into genuine admiration. The essay was exceptionally well-written, detailed, and insightful. The high score it had received was well-deserved.
Impressed, yet still puzzled by the gaps in your history, Soshiro couldn't shake the feeling that there was more to your story than what was on paper.
"Playing mysterious huh," Hoshina murmured, a mischievous smirk playing on his lips as he skimmed through the other files.
Later, he reached the captain's office, as he knocked on the door. Soshiro entered, carrying the pile of examinee papers. Mina, engrossed in her paperwork, looked up as he saluted and gently placed the files on her desk.
"Here are the current examinees," he announced.
Mina picked up the files, scanning through them with the thought of someone searching for a particular name.
Soshiro, noticing her intent expression, continued, "We've got a few interesting folks in the lineup, Captain Ashiro. Then again, I doubt you're interested in anything outside of killing Kaiju."
As Mina flipped through the papers, she paused upon seeing a familiar last name. Her eyes narrowed slightly as she examined the profile-a young woman with the same surname as Kafka, that stirred a flicker of envy on her.
She continued flipping until she found the file she wanted, Kafka Hibino's. Alongside his, she compared it to yours. Both files indicated you were single yet you were siblings with him, which piqued her curiosity for a moment before she brushed it aside.
'He had a sister? Since when?' She thought in question, "Keep talking. I can work and listen," she said, placing the files to the side of her desk.
Soshiro, taken aback by her uncharacteristic multitasking, smiled and placed a thoughtful thumb under his chin. "Oh, now this is rare. Well then, as far as noteworthy candidates go, I'd start with..."
