chapter seven

"Briar!"
The blonde was wearing a baby blue dress with white heels with her long blonde hair tied into a messy bun with light makeup. She looked up and smiled when she saw Ben grinning at her.
"Hey," she said as she hugged him tightly.
"What made you change your mind?" he asked as Briar chuckled and turned around.
"The boy stuffing his face with chocolate," she said with a soft smile on her face as he watched him. Ben smiled as he looked at his best friend and then at Carlos.
"Are you falling for him?" Ben asked quietly as they walked towards his parents.
"I really think I am," she said with a smile.
"Briar!"
The blonde looked up and grinned when Belle and Beast saw her.
"Hey," she said smiling as she hurried over to them and hugged them tightly.
"Your grandmother was asking for you," Beast said with a knowing look as Briar sighed and nodded.
"That'a a first," she said, "I'll be back." The family sent her sympathetic smiles and nodded as the blonde made her way towards her grandmother.
"Briar," Carlos said, running up to the girl.
"Hey," she said smiling as she looked at him.
"Oh I er, I got this for you," he said, holding out a small bouquet of pink and blue roses. "It reminded me of you." Briar's eyes lit up and she hugged the white haired boy tightly and smiled.
"I love them," she said, "thank you."
"Are you okay?" he asked, "you seem, off?"
"I have to talk to my grandmother," she said, "and we don't get along."
"I'm here if you need an escape," he said as she smiled.
"Thank you," she said. She kissed his cheek and walked towards her grandmother, who was already talking to Mal.
"Oh here we go," the blonde muttered.
"Briar-Rose!" Queen Leah said as the blonde approached the two, "about time! Who gave you those roses? Have you finally got yourself a prince?"
"Of sorts," she said, "um, I see you've met Ma- my new friend."
"Friend?" Mal asked, looking shocked as the blonde smiled.
"Yeah," she said smiling as she looked at Mal who smiled back. Briar turned to Queen Leah. "Her and her friends are new."
"Well I figured that," Queen Leah snapped at her youngest grandaughter.
"Grammy," Audrey said, holding a cup of juice in her hand. Briar sighed as she looked at Mal who looked at Briar with a sympathetic look.
"Oh, Audrey!" Queen Leah said, changing her attitude quickly, "give Grammy a kiss, dear." Audrey looked at Mal and her face turned bitter.
"Grammy, I don't think you want to be talking to this girl," Audrey said as Briar sighed.
"Audrey," Briar said in a warning tone.
"Unless you feel like taking another hundred-year nap," Audrey finished as Queen Leah looked confused.
"What?" Queen Leah asked. She turned to look at Mal and then it hit her. "You!" she shrieked, grasping the attention of the others. Briar looked at Ben who came rushing over. "How are you here? And how have you stayed so young?"
"Queen Leah, it's okay," Ben said, an arm around Mal, "Maleficent is still on the island. This is her daughter, Mal." Mal sent her a smile as Briar looked worried. "Don't you remember my proclamation to give the new generation a chance?"
"A chance to what, Ben?" Queen Leah snapped, "destroy us? Come on. You remember, don't you? The poison apples. And the spells. Spells." She turned to Mal, "my daughter was raised by fairies because of your mother's curse. So her first words, her first steps, I missed it all! You mustn't trust her."
"I'm so so-" Mal started but Chad got involved.
"Go away!" Chad snapped, "stay away from her!"
"Stay out of this Chad," Briar snapped.
"What?" Chad asked, looking at the blonde, "they were raised by their parents, Briar. What do you think villains teach their kids? Huh? Kindness? Fair play? No way, okay? Uh-uh."
"And you were raised by your parents, yet you're an asshole!" Briar snapped. Chad ignored her and turned to Mal.
"You stole another girl's boyfriend," he said.
"Hey, hey!" Ben snapped.
"You enjoy hurting people," he said to Jay as Briar scoffed. He turned to Carlos. "You, you're nothing but a manipulator and a coward."
"Hey!" Briar snapped, ready to swing for Chad, but Ben held her back.
"And you," he said, turning to Evie, "you're nothing but a gold digger and a cheater."
"Mirror, mirror, in my hand," Evie began, "who's the biggest jerk in the land?" She held up her mirror and Chad saw his reflection in it.
"What? Come on!" he scoffed, pushing Evie's hand to the side, causing her to stumble.
"Back off, Chad. All right? Back off!" Jay snapped, pushing him away from Evie. In the blink of an eye, Evie got out a perfume bottle, sprayed Chad twice and he fainted.
"Chad! Chad? Chad!" Audrey yelled as the others crowded around him while Briar stood there. "Evie did something to Chad!"
She turned around and saw the others running away.
"Guys!" she yelled, but they didn't hear her as she sighed. She turned to her grandmother. "Are you happy now? Did you have to speak to her like that? Mal is not her mother, just like Mom is not like you! She deserves a chance to be students here, they all do, and you have humiliated them!"
"Well my. . . ."
"No, stop making it all about you!" Briar said, the roses still in her hands. "This is not about you! Mom was perfectly happy living with the fairies, you were the one who had the problem. Sometimes I wish I did too, just to get away from you!"
Both Audrey and Queen Leah looked shocked as Briar turned on her heel and walked away, trying to find the others.
"Bri, wait up!"
Briar turned around and saw Ben hurrying after her. The blonde smiled faintly before the two walked around the castle grounds, trying to find the others.
"There!" the blonde said, pointing as she saw the four of them sitting at the bench. The two best friends walked towards the four who were sat on a bench, not saying anything.
"Hey, guys," Ben said as Briar smiled and looked at her friends.
"I'm so sorry about earlier," the blonde said, looking at Mal. "I didn't know. . . ."
"It's not your fault," Mal said to the blonde who smiled.
"Forget about it. All right?" Ben asked as Briar nodded. "It was nothing. Forget about it. Let it go. Tomorrow, after the coronation, I promise everything will be okay."
"We have to go now," Briar said with a small smile, "we'll see you later, okay?" The four VK's nodded weakly before Briar and Ben walked away.
