chapter twelve

The next day found Briar walking around with Jane, both chatting away. Jane was in charge of decorating Cotillion while Briar was getting Mal's surprise ready.

"Mal," Jane said, walking to the purple-haired girl while Carlos looked up and made his way to the blonde.

"Bri," he said smiling.

"Hey," she said smiling as she held the clipboard to her chest. "You okay?"

"Yeah," he said as she smiled, "I was wondering, uh, if you liked the, the carrot cake last night?"

"You know I did," she chuckled, "you were sat with me and you ate my icing."

"Oh yeah, that's right," he said as she chuckled. "Well, next one's on me."

"Sounds like a plan," she said as she smiled at him. "If you'll excuse me, I need to talk with Ben."

"Yeah, yeah of course," he said smiling as she smiled at him and made her way to Ben.

"Ben," the blonde said as Jane walked towards Mal. She nodded her head slightly and the two stepped away from the others.

"How's it coming along?" he asked quietly.

"So, we're nearly done," she said, "we've got all the pieces together, but we need your opinion." She held up three shades of green glass. "Which one for Mal's eyes?" Ben looked through them all before he came to the brightest green one.

"This one," he said, "this is the one."

"Perfect," the blonde said as she took it from Ben. "I'll get that all ready after cheer practice."

"You're a superstar Bri," he said grinning as the blonde smiled.

"I try," she said smiling.

Later that day, Briar was making her way towards the sports room where the fencing practice was happening with her clipboard in her hand.

"Hey Jane," the blonde said smiling, "what have I missed?"

"There's an amazing fencer!" Jane said. Briar looked down and her eyes went wide as she saw the person defeated Jay was Lonnie.

"It's Lon," she laughed, cheering with the others as Lonnie had a wide grin on her face.

"Not bad," Jay said as Lonnie grinned.

"You should put me on the team," Lonnie said as Jay shrugged, a grin on his face.

"Hey, w-what?!" Chad asked, shocked as Briar rolled her eyes. "No, no, no. We'll, we'll be the laughing stock of the league. A-And what's gonna happen next? We'll have girls playing tourney? Come on, guys."

"So?" Jay asked, not seeing an issue as Chad looked at him, offended.

"So?" he asked in shock. "Uh, so, have you not read the rule book?" he got out the book from his pocket and opened the page. "Section two, paragraph three. A team will be comprised of a captain and eight men. Hmm?" Briar scoffed as Chad held the book open and showed everyone, a smug look on his face. "Why don't you read the rule book?"

"Okay, yeah, but you're down a man!" Lonnie said as Briar looked at her. "I mean, since Ben had to leave to do all that king stuff."

"Exactly," Chad said, "we're down a man." Briar scoffed as she looked at him with a shocked look.
