chapter six

"I'm sorry, your middle name is Oscar?"

"Don't laugh," Carlos said, but he couldn't help the grin on his face. The two were sitting at the Enchanted Lake, away from Ben and Mal as they were having a picnic.

"I'm not," she chuckled, "I think it's sweet." Carlos smiled at her.

"What's yours then?" he asked, grabbing a chocolate-coated strawberry.

"I don't have one," she said, shrugging, "my full name is Briar-Rose, but it's just my first name."

"It's a very pretty name," he said as she smiled at him. She stood up and grinned.

"Come on," she said, "let's go for a swim."

"I can't swim," he said as Briar looked at him confused.

"You can't?" she asked, "but you live on an island?"

"With a magic barrier around it," he said as she hesitated.

"Oh yeah," she said.

"I mean, you go for a swim, please," he said, "I don't want to ruin your day." Briar smiled as she kissed the tip of his white curly hair before taking her dress off and revealing her light blue swimsuit that had small fairies on. "Are those little fairies on your costume?" She looked down and hesitated.

"Maybe," she laughed as he grinned. She chuckled before dived into the water.

"Whoa!" he yelled, terror on his face as he scrambled up.

Briar emerged from the water, laughing at the shocked face on Carlos's face as she swam towards him and grinned.

"You sure you don't want to join me?' she asked as he nodded.

"Next time?" he asked as she grinned.

"Next time," she smiled, "there's this really cool place a bit further up. I'll bring you something back."

Carlos nodded and smiled as she dived back into the water, splashing Carlos briefly as she swam under the water. Her eyes watered slightly as she realised Carlos had given her a love spell, but spell or no spell, she felt the same.

"Ben!"

"Briar!"

"We need to talk!" The two best friends ran towards each other and nodded. They made their way to Ben's dorm and both look worried.

"The cookie had a love potion!" they said together before looking confused.

"Wait, what?" Briar asked.

"My cookie that Mal gave me, it had a love potion," he said as Athena laughed.

"The one Carlos gave me had a love potion in it as well," she said as Ben laughed. "Do you feel the same way about Mal?"

"I do," he said, "do you feel the same way about Carlos?"

"I do," she said smiling as Ben grinned.

"Then, let them think we're still under the spell," Ben said, "unless they try and break it, we don't say anything."

"Sounds like a plan," she said smiling.

"Are you coming to family day?" he asked as the two walked out of his room and down the hallway.

"I don't know," she said, "Grammy favours Audrey and I can't deal with hearing how much of a disappointment I am to the family."

"Bri," Ben said as the blonde shrugged.

"I'm used to it. Besides, I can always hang with Carlos and Mal," she joked as Ben laughed. She chuckled as she shrugged.

"Well, I'll hopefully see you on Sunday," he said, "but I understand if you don't go." Briar smiled and nodded as she waved goodbye to Ben.

Early Sunday morning came and the blonde was making her way down to the field where she saw Carlos playing fetch with Dude.

"I know I have good judgment, I know I have good taste," the blonde sang as she watched him, "it's funny and it's ironic that only I feel that way. I promise 'em that you're different and everyone makes mistakes, but just don't."

Carlos looked up at her and waved as she smiled and waved back.

"I know that you're a villain, but don't villainise my love," she sang as she sighed, "whatever devil's inside you, don't let him out tonight. I tell them it's just your culture and everyone rolls their eyes. Yeah, I know, all I'm asking, baby."

She got up and began walking down the steps.

"Please, please, please, don't prove I'm right," she sang as she looked at Carlos laughing, "and please, pleasе, please, don't bring me to tеars when I just did my makeup so nice. Heartbreak is one thing, my ego's another, I beg you, don't embarrass me like the others. Please, please, please."

The blonde watched Carlos with a look as she stood at the bottom of the stairs.

"If you wanna go and be stupid, don't do it in front of me," she sang as Carlos laughed with Dude. "If you don't wanna cry to your friends, don't make me hate you prolifically. Please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please."

She sighed as Carlos came running over to her with a grin.

"Hey," he said, kissing her cheek as she smiled at him.

"Hey," she said smiling as she looked at him.

"Are you okay?" he asked, "how come you're not at family day?"

"My Grammy favours Audrey and likes to remind me how much of a disappointment I am," she said.

"Oh, Briar, I'm sorry," he said as she shrugged.

"Don't be," she said, "it's not your fault. Are you guys going?"

"I will if you do," he said as she chuckled.

"Carlos," she said as he stood up and shook his head.

"Nope," he said. He held out his hand for the blonde to take. She took it and laughed when he pulled her up. "Now, go get dressed and I'll meet you with the others in an hour."

She chuckled and nodded as he grinned.
