Felix sat at his desk, the light from his laptop casting a soft glow in the dimly lit room.
His heart pounded as he opened the travel website once more, searching for flights to Sydney. Every time he found one that seemed affordable, additional fees and taxes pushed it out of reach.
His savings were meager, and he had bills to pay, but the thought of not being there for his aunt was unbearable.
I'm absolutely getting that job at the boba shop after I come back.
"Come on, there has to be something," he muttered, scrolling through the options.
After hours of searching and calculating, he found a flight that he could just about afford if he skipped a few meals and cut back on other expenses. He booked it without hesitation, feeling a mix of relief and anxiety wash over him. It was going to be tight, but he would make it work.
...
A week had already passed. Felix arrived at the airport, clutching his worn-out backpack. Every step closer to the gate felt surreal. He had never traveled so far on such short notice, and the financial strain weighed heavily on him. But he knew he had to do this.
On the flight, Felix tried to distract himself with a movie, but his thoughts kept drifting. What would happen when he got back to Korea? He thought about his friends-how will they think of him after he came back? Would they still be close after this? Would they still want him?
Will they understand?
I'm going to be so busy taking care of Aunt Momo.
What if they think I'm abandoning them if I stay too long?
I need to text Chan as soon as I see her condition.
Felix and his friends had always been tight. They had gone through school together, shared countless laughs and tears, and had each other's backs. But this situation was different. This was life-changing. It was either be together or be.....
"Maybe they'll drift away," a small voice in his head whispered.
"No," he argued with himself. "They're my friends. They'll support me."
But doubt lingered. He couldn't help but worry about the future. The hours dragged on, and he finally fell into a restless sleep.
When he landed in Sydney, jetlag hit him like a wave. He navigated through the bustling airport, his mind fixated on his aunt. The taxi ride to the hospital seemed to take forever, the city's vibrant life a stark contrast to the turmoil inside him.
At the hospital, Felix felt a mix of fear and hope. He found a nurse in the waiting room. She led him to the ICU. The beeping machines and sterile smell made Felix's stomach churn. The doctor, a kind-faced woman in her fifties, met them outside the room.
"She's stable," the doctor said, her tone professional yet gentle. "But the accident caused significant internal injuries. She has a condition called paraplegia as a result of the accident. She's going to need ongoing treatment and assistance."
The words felt like a punch to Felix's gut. He entered the room and saw his aunt, her frail body almost lost in the hospital bed. Tears welled up in his eyes, and he sank into the chair beside her, taking her hand in his.
As he sat there, the gravity of the situation overwhelmed him. Anxiety bubbled up, and the familiar voices in his head began to whisper their doubts and fears.
You can't handle this.
How will you afford her care?
What if she never recovers?
You're useless.
Felix squeezed his eyes shut, trying to block out the relentless barrage. He felt himself spiraling, but then, like a lifeline, memories began to surface.
He remembered summer days spent in his aunt's garden, her laughter as they chased each other with the garden hose.
"Auntie stop! Haha, you're gonna dirty Mr. Chiky!" Little Felix's voice came at the memory.
He thought of family dinners, where her stories always lit up the room.
"And that's how I became the most powerful woman in the world." His aunt's voice from a couple year's ago made it's way in his mind, as well as his little self's laughter at his aunt's jokes.
He recalled his friends, their unwavering support, and the good times they shared.
He remembered their gaming night, their movie nights, their picnics, their meetings at school or at the boba shop and their stupid jokes.
Slowly, the memories pushed the voices back. He took deep breaths, focusing on the love and joy that his aunt had brought into his life. She was a fighter, and he needed to be strong for her now.
Opening his eyes, Felix looked at his aunt, her face peaceful in sleep. He leaned in and whispered, "We're going to get through this, I promise."
For the first time since receiving the news, a sense of calm settled over him. He wasn't alone in this; he had his family, his friends, hopefully, and the countless memories that gave him strength.
As he sat there, holding his aunt's hand, Felix knew that no matter what the future held, they would face it together.
