Ashton's phone was buzzing.
His hands froze mid-action as he glanced off to the side, eyes landing on the device. The noise was even louder since it was on a metal, industrial table, and Ash should've moved it earlier. He meant to, but he got distracted, and now his phone sounded louder than actuality and was also splattered with blood.
Ash sighed, taking off his facial protection and one of his gloves, before grabbing the phone and using one of the few clean spots on the corpse's clothing to wipe off the blood, since Ash himself was covered in plastic. He was faced with the familiar name and several years old photo of his best friend flashing on the screen, and he hit the green button.
"What's up?" Ash answered, using his still-gloved hand to organize his workspace better, since it wasn't like he could do much else while on the phone.
"Ash? Hey, uh, can you do me a favor? It's Skylar." Jessie's voice rang out, sounding both frustrated and concerned. Common emotions when regarding his little brother, in Ashton's experience.
"Obviously," Ash replied, because what kind of question was that? There weren't many things out there that took priority over Ash's job, but Skylar and Jessie Hall were two of them. Though... not for the same reason.
"Right," Jessie took a deep breath on the other end of the line, and Ash could hear faint background noise. It sounded like a tv, but there were voices as well. They seemed young. "Well apparently he got in a skateboarding accident and he needs help. I'm babysitting for my neighbor, so I can't do anything. Could you go get him?"
Ash was already taking off his other glove and removing the rest of his protective gear. He cast one more look at the mostly intact mess of body parts that was the man he'd previously been cutting into pieces, and decided that it could wait until later. Since the room was temperature controlled, he had a bit longer before it started to rot. So, he could spare this.
Also... Skylar took priority, as stated before.
"Sure," Ash replied, and Jessie thanked him before hanging up. A moment later and he was receiving a text message with Skylar's location. Ash stepped out of the room and entered the bathroom as an afterthought, to make sure he didn't have any blood left on him. Sometimes, even with all the plastic he wore, it would slip in.
Ash found a small blood smear on his cheek, and he rinsed it off in the sink, before deeming himself fit to be seen by the outside world. It was pretty late, so the place was bustling with accorders as Ash made his way out. Nobody questioned him, because nobody ever did—well, except Nina, but she was at home—so he was able to exit the facility easily. Then, he was on his way to Skylar.
Skylar Hall was the little brother of Jessie Hall, Ashton's best friend. Ash had known him for about five years, and in that time, there had never been a dull moment with that boy. Seriously, Ash couldn't remember the last time he went a week without hearing about Skylar pulling some stunt, most of which ended in hospital visits. It was either that or getting in trouble with his school for various reasons, failing classes, and just generally being a nuisance and unexplainably injured all the time.
Skylar stressed Jessie out to no end, and to Ash it seemed as though their father, Vince, was only ever angry with him. He'd listened in on several phone calls between the brothers and their parents, mostly against his will, and they were almost never positive.
