When we got back to my room I almost immediately plopped down on the bed, not trusting my legs to stand anymore. Jane hung around for a while. I wanted to ask her about her change in moods but I knew better than that. As long as I focused on something else the voice of the wolf left me alone. That got me thinking,
"Jane?" I asked with my shadow, watching for the wolf, just in case. She looked at me. "I want to try something, will you help me?"
"That depends, what do I have to do?" She asked warily.
"Nothing hard, all you have to do is use your gift on me." I said. She looked at me like I had just asked her to cut off her own arm. They are really going to start questioning my mental health around here. She slowly nodded, agreeing. "Thank you, could you just hold it for ten seconds or so?" She nodded again, I quickly created a small stone and completely focused on it. "Okay." I told her without breaking my concentration. I focused on only the stone in my hand. The way it felt, the temperature, the hardness of it, its color. I could feel the pain in the back of my head, but as long as I didn't think of it there was no pain. After 10 seconds it stopped.
"How did you do that?" Jane asked.
"Just a trick I picked up, I had to hide the fact I knew about vampires from a mind reader. Not the easiest thing. Your gift is mental, so as long as I focus on only one thing and blockout everything out I am unaffected. It's pretty useless though, because I have to know it's coming. Once you slip the pain is all you can think about so there is no blocking it then." I explained. Jane was nodding reassured by the fact that it was pretty useless. She seemed to like torturing people and didn't want people to start being unaffected by her gift. There was a knock followed by the door opening and Alec walking. "You know, when you knock you are supposed to wait for permission. If you don't there is no point in knocking at all." He seemed shocked for a second, then a slow smile spread across his face.
"Look who actually talked to me without me asking a question and refusing to leave until I got an answer." I glared at him. "Jane, you're wanted in the throne room." He said walking out. She rose and followed him out, and I was left alone. I was already bored and Jane hadn't even closed the door yet. I entertained myself with my fire for a while practicing turning it on and off and spreading it in specific places. I was basically trying to not let myself think. But, alas it did not work.
'You should not stay here.' the voice of the midnight wolf said. It was wild and not used to being contained.
'I must.' I told it
'Why?' it wondered
'They threatened my sister.' I say
'She is part of your pack?'
'Yes.'
'Eliminate the threat.' It said,
'I can not.'
'Why not? We are strong.'
'We are alone. They are many.'
'What about our pack?'
'They are not here to help.'
'They abandoned us?'
'In a way.'
'They are not our pack then. You have no reason to protect them.'
'Yes, I do.'
'Why are you loyal to those who are not loyal to you?'
'Because it is the right thing to do.'
'You are sacrificing yourself for them.' It was not a question but I answered the wolf anyway.
