"Oh my fucking god how are you messing up making eggs it's like the easiest thing to cook" Nia hip bumped Peter out of the way and took the spatula from his hand, "go pour the juice or something"
"I had it under control"
"The eggs are burnt and stuck to the pan"
"I'll go pour the juice" Peter looked ashamed as he got the juice out of the fridge
"You guys know we have chefs for this type of stuff right?" Ed chuckled walking into the kitchen
"And you know you need basic life skills like cooking to survive right?" Nia raised an eyebrow and pointed to Ed with the spatula, who just shrugged and sat at the table.

"No Lu you got question 8 wrong see?" Enne pointed out her mistake on the paper. She decided to take a break from reading her book to help Lucy with her homework with Susan. Beside her Ed sat at the table on his phone scrolling through his social media,
"Ha stup-
"Edmund!" Enne elbowed him and gave him a disapproving look
"It's the same formula as question 3, you just have to plug the numbers in" Susan explained. The T.V droned on in the background however none of them were paying attention.

Peter took a moment to appreciate this moment, so mundane yet it hadn't felt like this since their mother passed away. He leant back on the kitchen island watching Nia cook the eggs, he could get used to a domestic life like this. The stress of work and his father seemed like a distant thought in this moment. He smiled a little then turned to pour the juice.
"Ed can you be useful and set the table" Susan asked after he tried to make another comment regarding Lucy's schoolwork.
"I don't wan-
"Wait- guys look at that" Lucy interjected and pointed towards the T.V screen turning the volume up.

There has been much controversy surrounding this years latest victors. Many claim they had no right to both win, and the people want something to be done!
The camera cuts to an interview of a citizen of the capital, his lips adorned with green jewels to match his hair. "I think it's unfair, there should only be one victor, they aren't even from the same district. These poor districts can't be given this amount of privilege and something has to be done."
It cuts to a picture of the president, the president has already put out a statement regarding his thoughts on the matter. "The game maker has made a choice and he has paid the consequences as a result. The girls currently stay with one of my head consultants until we figure out how to proceed. After discussing the matter with the victors themselves I will make a decision. Until then, do not question the decisions of those who know better"

The stern voice of the white haired leader rang out throughout the house, quickly cut of as Peter grabbed the remote quickly muting it. He looked at Nia as her expression quickly changed from concern to neutral. He could see right through it.
"What's going to happen now" Lucy asked worriedly glancing at Nia and Enne.
"Don't worry Lu" Nia replied placing some eggs and bacon in front of her, then returning to the kitchen to get more, "that's a problem for another day"
"Nia that's not a good way of thinking about it" Peter grabbed her elbow gently, "something really bad could happen" he said staring intently at her.
"I'm sure it'll be ok" Enne chimed in getting up to grab the juice, the two girls exchanged a quick worried look, then went back to preparing the table for breakfast.
"Enne-" Edmund started, before changing his mind on what he was initially going to say. He ran a hand through his hair and sighed, "do you wanna come with me to the library later? It's huge and they have this life size chess set I think you'd like"
Enne smiled shyly at him and nodded while Susan, Peter, and Nia raised their eyebrows and exchanged looks. Nia put some music on and they all sat down for breakfast.
"This is relaxing, who sings this?" Susan asked
"Hozier!" Nia replied, mouth still filled with food
"What's a Hozier" Peter asked confused
Nia stared at him for a moment,
"Are you fucking dense?"
And with that the table went back to lighthearted banter.

Enne and Nia quietly washed and dried dishes after Peter and Susan left to work and to drop Lucy to school. Ed had decided to take a post breakfast nap which was apparently a regular thing for him. The two worked harmoniously in silence, not having to talk much while they clean up around the kitchen, once finished they went out to the balcony with their teas, admiring the big city below them.
"So what do you think is gunna happen" Enne asked
"No idea to be honest" Nia shrugged, "hopefully nothing too bad"
"Hopefully they won't make us go back in"
"They won't- they can't. I think it'll just be a talk about how they're not going to do this again and how we have to act like capital citizens and not like we come from the districts"
"That could be dangerous"
"Hm?"
"Like, we kinda owe President Snow, that's not really a position I want to be in"
"Yea fuck, I didn't even think about that"
"Girl, we are screwed aren't we"
"Yes, yes we are" Nia smiled and draped her arm over her friend, "so totally fucked"
"That's great" Enne rolled her eyes and laughed, "at least we'll die together" she smiled and leaned her head on Nia's shoulder.
"Hey" Nia says suddenly, placing her hands on Enne's shoulders and turning to face her, "you know if protect you with my life right?"
"Yea and I'd do the same for you"
The two girls hugged, feeling like the only thing they had for certain was each other.
