Ayoshi walked into the Art Club. It's the first day of the School Festival and he was assigned here. He looked around, spotted Osano, and walked over. "Hello, Osano-kun."
Osano flinched and turned around to see Ayoshi. "What are you doing here?"
"I'm here to help."
"Well, there isn't really anything for you to help with right now, so I guess you can help clean after sessions."
Ayoshi nodded, "Mm."
Soon people started filling the room. Osano counted six people and told the rest to come back later. He stood in front of the group and said, "Hello everyone, thank you for joining us today. We will do sculpting. You may make whatever you wish, however, I will demonstrate how to make a teapot if you wish to follow. Please put on your aprons and sit at a station. If you are having trouble, you may ask for help from a club member." There were eight stations, but he needed one and told Ayoshi to sit in the one closest to him. "You can follow along."
Ayoshi followed Osano's instructions and put on an apron before sitting down. He examined his clay, "Hmm?"
After turning on his wheel, Osano started shaping the clay. He's done so much it didn't take long for him to finish demonstrating. While washing the soap off his hands, he turned to his right to see Ayoshi. After their first meeting, Osano couldn't stop thinking about the other. However, after getting to know each other, happiness bubbled up inside of him at the thought of all the time they would spend together today.
Osano froze in shock. With wide eyes, he thought, 'What the hell is that dummy doing?!' He shook off the water on his hands and rushed towards Ayoshi. He, with a red face, asked, "What the hell is that!?"
Ayoshi tilted his head at Osano, stopping his back-and-forth hand movements. "It's my sculpture."
"You should be making a teapot!"
"That sounds boring."
Osano could feel his left eye twitch at the long and thick clay sticking up from the wheel. 'Why does it feel so... wrong?' He pointed at Ayoshi's creation. "I know it's your sculpture, but what exactly is it?"
Ayoshi looked at Osano like the answer was obvious. "It's a snake."
Osano became dumbfounded, his mouth falling open. "Sna-snake!?" Ayoshi gave him a nod, causing him to let out an exasperated sigh. He grabbed a chair and brought it next to Ayoshi, asking, "How about I help you?"
Ayoshi thought about it for a second before answering, "Ok."
Osano exhaled with relief as he started squishing the clay down. "Let's make a teapot."
Ayoshi grabbed Osano's wrist with a shake of his head. "No, I want to make a snake."
Osano didn't know whether to laugh or cry. Trying to persuade Ayoshi, he explained, "But teapots are really nice, and after it's done drying, you can use the teapot."
With a vigorous head shake, Ayoshi said, "It has to be a snake."
Osano rubbed his face, finally giving in to Ayoshi's demands. "Whatever you want, however, this isn't going to work, so we need to scrap this and start over."
Ayoshi looked down at his failed sculpture and gave in. "Okay."
Osano's tense shoulders became lax from relief as he said, "Ok, let's begin." He went back to squishing the clay into something more usable. Once he finished, he said, "Give it a try. If you're struggling, I'll step in and help you." Ayoshi once again began doing the back-and-forth hand movement to the clay as the wheel spun. He watched in horror at the display, not knowing how to feel. "Ok-ok, that is enough!"
Ayoshi stopped what he was doing and looked at Osano with a slightly confused expression. "Why?"
Osano moved his chair, sat behind Ayoshi, and he laid his hands on top of Ayoshi's. "You obviously need a lot of help. Pay close attention as I guide your hand movements." He started moving their hands together in a slow and gentle manner. He held Ayoshi's smaller hand in his larger ones. His chest pressed against Ayoshi's back as he looked over his shoulder and he could feel Ayoshi's soft hair grazing his cheek. They were in such an intimate position 'Strawberries, such a sweet scent.' He wanted to bury his face into the Ayoshi's neck, but he bit his tongue in shame. 'What the hell is wrong with you?! Get it together.'
"You're really good at this," Ayoshi complimented.
Trying to calm himself, Osano answered, "My mom owns a pottery shop. She likes to sell her pottery and teach classes."
"She taught you?"
"As a child, I would watch my mother do pottery. Teapots were always my favorite things she would make. They were so beautiful, so I made her teach me, causing me to fall in love with pottery. I have a display of all my creations in my room." His lips formed into a loving smile. "My mother loves when I make her tiny animals. She carries around a frog I made. She says I'm very talented and wants me to take over the business."
"Do you want to take it over?"
"Yeah, I enjoy teaching people. I'm also very popular with the older women who come to the shop. My mother says I would attract so much business," Osano says with a laugh. After talking for a while, he noticed that they had made good progress. The snake's body had roughly been done. "I've helped you enough. It's time to try it on your own."
Ayoshi slightly nudged Osano's hand. "You have to let go of my hands first."
Osano wanted to scream as he snatched his hands back. "So-sorry!"
With Osano's advice, Ayoshi smoothed out the clay. He carved scales on the body and started forming a tongue.
Osano had not moved from behind Ayoshi. He rested his head on Ayoshi's shoulder and just watched him. The comfortable position and pleasant atmosphere caused him to become drowsy.
"Ok everyone, time is up. Please get cleaned up. We will place your sculptures in our kiln to dry. You can come back at the end of the day to pick it up."
Osano's head snapped up when the vice president's voice startled him awake. He rubbed his eyes, tears forming in his eyes as he let out a yawn. He got up from his seat, already missing Ayoshi's warmth. "Was I asleep for long?"
"Just a few minutes," Ayoshi answered.
After his vision came back into focus, Osano got a good look at Ayoshi's sculpture. It wasn't very well made, but it had charm to it. He couldn't help but let out a soft laugh as he said, "You did good, very cute. Let's get you cleaned up."
"Thank you."
After setting the sculpture to kiln, the two walked up to the sink. Osano never touched the clay directly, so his hands were pretty clean. To not dirty the handle of the sink, he turned on the water for Ayoshi and put some soap into his hands. "Make sure to wash them properly."
Under Osano's supervision, Ayoshi made sure to lather the soap until it covered his hands thoroughly. He was washing the soap off when he felt a wet sensation on his face.
Osano had gotten a wet wipe to clean Ayoshi's face. "How do you get clay on your face? What did you do while I was sleeping? So messy." He continued to roughly rub the wipe on Ayoshi's cheek, letting out a laugh at his silly, squished face.
"Thank you," Ayoshi said with a muffled voice.
Osano sighed in a helpless manner as his hand movements slowed down. He looked at Ayoshi's face and into his eyes with a faint, doting smile. "Just be careful next time, dummy."
