AS PERCY CAREFULLY TENDED TO the eggs in the pan, Kebechet kept tugging at her skirt or hugging her legs. The little girl couldn't seem to keep still, and it vaguely reminded her of what she was like as an unmedicated child with ADHD.

Mom, I'm so sorry for all that stress I put you through when I was a kid. I'm sorry for trying to kidnap our neighbor's dog when I was six because I thought she looked cute, or that one time I almost clogged the sink drain with oreo cookies that I threw away because I was a picky eater and only wanted to eat the cream, she thought dramatically.

She glanced down at the ends of her black dress, hoping that no stains had gotten on it. Anubis seemed to enjoy giving her the most beautiful black dresses she had ever seen, and she didn't want to ruin any of the clothes he had generously lended to her. This particular one looked so expensive too, a divinely soft black dress decorated with all kinds of golden accessories, inlaid with bright red rubies.

(Was it just her or were these dresses getting more and more extravagant?)

"Are you done, are you done, are you dooooooone?" Kebechet sang. She seemed to have lost interest in playing with her skirt and was now opting to slither around the floor like she was trying to do the worm dance.

"Almost done, and Kebi, get off the floor," she chided calmly. "It's dirty, people walk all over the floors all the time."

She flopped onto her back, staring up at her with a tearful pout. "But I'm hungryyyy!"

"Gods can't get hungry, sweetie." Percy said knowingly.

"Okay. That's true," Kebechet admitted, but her pouting game only grew ten times worse. "But I still wanna try your cookingggg!"

"I know, I know," she swiftly turned off the stove once the eggs were perfectly poached. Then she immediately bent down to swoop the girl up, lifting her back onto her legs. "I just finished! Let me set everything up. Go wait in the great hall with your dad for me, okay?"
