Your mind missed the peaceful life in the countryside. You used to have a life full of constant work to survive day to day while your father worked hard as a lumberjack and your mother was a hunter. You ran the household while your younger sisters were too busy growing up.
Despite not having a very glamorous, or even easy life, there was nothing better than walking through the tall grasses after a hard day's work. Your little sisters used to go with you to run into the rainbow sunset amidst teasing giggles that were directed at the slow Mimiko. They would stroll along the gravel paths until their mother yelled at them that it was time to go home for dinner. It was a simple life they couldn't really complain about, although there were problems at times.
Hanging white sheets to dry when the wind acts up is more complicated than it sounds. You threw the freshly-soaked fabric over the rope again and again until it stopped flying away. Setting the little wooden hooks, you secure it in place and stretched it along the rope. You moved a little away from the clothesline to appreciate your finished work. The sheets, white aprons and long dresses fluttered against the fierce wind, drifting against the current. Your hair and brown dress fluttered at the same speed as you took deep breaths. Washing everything had taken all morning, your hands looked like raisins from spending hours at the river.
Now it was time to cook lunch. You were about to enter the cabin again, but you noticed in the distance how a little 4-year-old Mimiko was running at full speed towards you. Her boots, worn out from endless hours of play, squashed the grass with every quick step she took. She looked really worried, losing her breath. Something was going on. You ran up to her to make sure she was okay. "A curse is coming?" you thought the worst.
"What happened? Are you okay?" You asked her when you saw how sweaty she was from running under the summer sun.
"Yorozu and Nanako are fighting the neighbors!" Your little sister answered with her voice cracking with fatigue.
"Again?!" She nodded. You sighed in relief that it wasn't a real threat. "Take me with them," you ordered.
Mimiko took you by the hand to pull you towards where the fight was taking place. You ran for half a kilometer to the hut closest to yours. The neighbors were a family similar to yours. A married couple with an older son, Nagito, and two younger sisters, Nagi and Nara. You knew what they were about as soon as you saw the house.
This situation always repeated itself from time to time. Nagito has always been in love with Yorozu, but she never felt the same... For as long as they have known each other, he always courted her. Yorozu liked playing with him because she finds it funny every time he blushes like a tomato when she tells him he looks handsome or feels his muscles. But she rejects him every time he asks her out on a date telling him that he's not good enough for her, completely crushing the poor delusional boy's ego. The Nagito's younger sisters were sick of watching Yorozu break their brother's heart over and over again, so they have fought on several occasions.
Mimiko told you that they were at the neighbors' house because Nagito had invited her to see the new tomatoes he had grown so she could take some. She said that the sisters got very angry when they saw them there and picked a fight. They arrived at the backyard where Yorozu was fighting with Nagi, while Nanako was wallowing in the mud against Nara.
"Hey, take your dirty hands off my sister!" You shouted at Nagi, the sister closer to your age, who was hitting Yorozu in the face. You ran towards them to pull them apart.
"Get away from me, bitch!" Nagi screamed before pushing you against a pile of wood that was meant for a fence. "We've had enough of you coming here to disturb our peace."
You analyzed the situation calmly. Nagi had Yorozu pinned against a ditch, Nara was pulling Nanako's hair while Mimiko was rushing to them. Nagito was nowhere to be seen. "Coward... No wonder Yorozu doesn't like you," you thought disappointed, theorizing that he had run away to stay out of trouble. The girls' parents didn't seem to be home just like yours. You propped yourself up on your feet to get back to the fight against Nagi.
