Fireflies

Looking up at the night sky,
I see twinkling fireflies.
They've been there all this while,
Haven't they,
Candles in the skies?

They surround the moon,
Weaving a gorgeous, glittering garland.
I am mesmerized by their dance,
Fairies from forgotten lands.

Gazing at this flickering orchestra,
I realize they are beautiful together,
Desolate and dismayed alone,
Destined to shimmer, not to glow.

They sing their silent songs,
Send their silent signals.
But if you listen closely,
There is a silent tune,
inviting you to join in,
To float silently forevermore.

I like to believe
We were once like them,
Inviting and vibrant together,
Because all that we are now
Is desolate, desperate, and somber.
