Niko let out a grumble, still half asleep but he was never one to sleep in, even on his birthday.
He yawned and opened his eyes, taking in his sisters happy expression.
"Why're you so happy?" He grumbled, his voice gravelly from sleep.
"Because it's my baby brothers birthday." She smiled widely and shook his shoulder.
He groaned, burying his face into his pillow.
"I'm not a baby." He mumbled, though he couldn't hide how his own smile was starting to grow wider.
"Yeah you are, you were like four yesterday."
"I haven't been four since I was ten, dumbass." He muttered as he pushed her hand off his shoulder, shoving her to the side gently.
"Get up, it's your birthday. I got you something." Aria said as she stood up from sitting on the bed, still smiling widely.
He let out an overly dramatic sigh and threw the blankets off of himself, sitting up in his bed and yawning widely.
"Ok ok, I'm up." He grumbled, though she could see the excitement in his eyes as he looked up at her.
"Wow, the teenage angst moved quick. Come on, come on, let's go." She jumped up and down slighty and pulled him out of bed.
He groaned but let himself get pulled out of bed, stumbling to his feet with an amused smile on his face.
"I'm coming already, calm down." He laughed as she pulled him out of the room.
He saw a box wrapped in newspaper on the counter. "I know it's a shitty wrapping job but newspaper was all I could get my hands on."
He stepped closer to the box, an excited smile on his face.
He didn't care that it was shitty wrapping, it could be wrapped in a garbage bag and it would be the best present he'd ever gotten.
He looked up at his sister to see her watching him with a hopeful look on her face.
He smiled at her and picked up the box, shaking it slightly to see if he could guess what was inside.
"Come on! Open it!" She waved him off and sat on the arm of the couch. It warmed her heart to see him so happy.
His hands eagerly tore at the wrapping, the wrapping paper falling to the floor forgotten.
He pulled open the box, excitement in his expression as he reached into the box and pulled out what was inside.
"I know how upset you got when your old skateboard lost a wheel, so, I figured it's time you get an upgrade." Aria shrugged. She knew it wasn't much, and if she could, she would have gotten him a lot more.
He looked down at the brand new skateboard in amazement, his eyes almost sparkling.
He ran his hand over the deck, as if to make sure it was real.
"This is..." He trailed off, speechless for maybe the first time in his entire life.
"I'm sorry it's not more-"
She was cut off by his arms wrapping around her.
"Shut up, it's perfect." He mumbled as he hugged her tightly, a wide smile on his face.
He was never a super emotional kid, and this was the most emotion he'd shown in a long time.
She smiled kissed the top of his head. "Happy birthday Niko."
He picked the new skateboard back up, admiring it for a second longer before turning to his sister.
"Can't I go try it out?" He asked and she rolled her eyes, pushing him away lightly.
