-five months later-
It was official. Lin Beifong was the most intimidating person Aria had ever met.
The police program was tough, Aria had never been able to earth bend like that before, none the less metal bend. But, Aria was determined, Chief Beifong was able to see that.
As of Aria's position, she was usually patrolling alongside the Chief at her request.
The girl had even gotten her own desk. Which, wasn't a lot, but it was hers.
Aria still was living in her apartment. She knew it wasn't exactly the best place to live, especially since it was so quiet now with just her. But it was home. She couldn't bring herself to leave it just yet.
"Hey! Rookie! You've got another letter." A letter was thrown onto her desk, making her raise her head up from her files and smile.
She only got letters from one person.
The letter had formal handwriting and a sophisticated red wax stamp. Classic Iroh. Aria missed him a lot, surprisingly.
She read the letter and she couldn't help but hear Irohs voice.
Dear Aria,
Things on deck have been uneventful. Everything is boring, no one is throwing any punches at me or telling me how pompous I am. I'm aware it's an odd thing to miss, but you have that effect. This might be wishful thinking, but, I believe if things continue to drag on here we can return to Republic City for a bit. Crossing my fingers for good luck.
If and when I find out, I will let you know. Or who knows, maybe I'll surprise you. I know you like surprises like that. (And you say I don't know how to live on edge)
My mother asked about you the other day, so did Ursa, they told me to tell you they send their best wishes. (Ursa didn't say that out loud, but, I know she wanted me to tell you.)
I miss hearing you laugh. Again, it's a stupid think to miss, I know, but it doesn't make it any less true.
If you haven't already, please look inside the envelope for the bonus that comes with this letter. I assume that with this and your new job combined, this will help you afford a new apartment. I know you don't like charity, call it an early birthday present. Me to you. (Please do not mail it back. Swallow your pride and take it.)
Love and miss you,
IrohAria looked back into the envelope and saw a wad of cash. She counted it.
4,000 yuans.
She couldn't believe him. Aria didn't like handouts. Was this a handout? Aria threw the money and letter in her bag and started to pack up for the day.
...
Mako shook his head and leaned back in the couch, "Come on, Ari, it's obviously a handout."
"No no no, you're overthinking it. I'm overthinking it. This is just him making sure im steady, this is a good thing."
Bolin chimed in, his eyes widening when he saw the amount of money. "4000 yuans?! That's a lot!" he exclaimed.
