The loud clash of the blades startle a few people nearby and force them to flee to a safe hiding spot. Flynn stumbles back and watches Malin push the other blade back with her two daggers.
"Flynn get back!" She shouts and stands between Flynn and Zelen.
"Zelen!" Flynn attempts to get closer to him but Malin swings her arm in front and pushes him back.
"I said get back you fool!" Flynn opens his mouth to argue but quickly shuts it. Zelen's blade is dripping with some kind of light blue liquid. The same liquid leaks from a wound on Malin's dominant arm.
It's poison.
Flynn's heart drops and his eyes blurr from a sudden jolt of adrenaline. His first thought is to rush and help, but a cry from behind him makes him realize there's children here too. Flynn looks back at the fight.
Malin can only use one arm now, the poison numbing her dominant arm and the dagger in it falling to the ground next to her.
"Malin!" Flynn goes to rush forward. He puts his hand up and with a flick of his wrist, a root shoots from the ground and wraps around Zelen's throat. The Tartanian struggles for a few seconds before thrusting his sword into the root.
Flynn cries out in pain as a large black crack explodes onto his upper back. The burning increases and the pain throbs. The same crack is on the root where Zelen had stabbed. "Get off him!" The Lost guy who had helped pull the cursed knife from the tree rushes at Zelen.
"No!" Flynn shouts but it's too late.
Zelen slices across the man's chest from hip to shoulder. "Zelen!" The taller boy walks over to Flynn and grabs his arm. The Lost boy falls to the ground, now lifeless. How can someone who's already dead die? It clicks, the poison kills their very soul rather than their bodies.
"We have to go." He tries to pull Flynn towards the bridge. "Zelen! Stop!" Flynn shouts and digs his feet into the ground.
"You don't understand Flynn. You HAVE to open the gateway." Flynn shakes his head wildly and rips his arm away. He stumbles back and stares Zelen down.
"No! This is wrong, Zelen! You purposely had the Nightmares attack the city! You want to open the gateway so you can attack Olympus and start a war! You hurt so many people!"
The brunette marches up to Flynn, a flash of pain and sorrow in his black and red eyes. "You don't understand Flynn." He stops a few inches from Flynn's face. "This world is a cruel A– place. The Olympians condemned us to this torture inside our own home." The sorrow fades into a vengeful rage.
"Revenge isn't the answer, Zelen. It's not right-" Zelen punches Flynn in the cheek hard enough to send him to the ground.
"What the h– do you know about Righteousness?! Why do you get a say on what we deserve if you've never been wronged!" Zelen closes the distance between them quickly and grabs Flynn's shirt collar. He lifts the much lighter boy off the ground.
"If you're all about justice and righteousness then why don't you explain to me what was so righteous about the gods condemning us to an eternal he–." Flynn pulls at Zelen's sleeve, a newfound sadness in his eyes.
"They aren't saints either, Zelen. Nothing they did to you was alright. But if you go to war it'll keep happening. They'll want revenge and then you'll want revenge and it'll never stop!" Flynn shouts.
Zelen doesn't say anything for a short while.
"It doesn't matter." He whispers under his breath. His head drops down, a stream of tears falling from his eyes. "You will never understand the pain they put us through Flynn. Justice doesn't matter anymore. Even if they choose to strike back we don't care."
"We won't stop and we won't let anyone stop us. We are going to war with the Olympians. And by the time it's over one of us will be dead and the other will be victorious." Flynn's mouth falls open and he tries to think of something to say but is left speechless.
"This is our revenge, Flynn. If you stand in my way then I'll kill you too."
Neither one says anything to the other for a long period. There isn't anything Flynn COULD say to Zelen right now. His mind is made up and nothing Flynn says will change it.
This isn't the same fun adventure to find his parents. This is serious. The tears streaming down Zelen's face prove it. This is the lives of real people.
"Zelen..." Flynn whispers.
The final realization hits Flynn harder than anything he's ever experienced.
This really is War. And now he's got to pick a side.
