Charlotte's eyes focused on the doorframe, there was a person there. She couldn't see who it was. The figure stood just beyond the threshold, shrouded in shadows, making it impossible to discern their features. Her heart rate quickened, fear mingling with confusion as she tried to make sense of the situation.
"Hello?" Charlotte's voice trembled as she called out, hoping to get a response. The figure remained silent, still and enigmatic. Her mind raced, trying to recall if she had seen anyone else in the house before she passed out.
Before she could speak again, the figure stepped into the light, revealing a familiar face. It was Maddison, her expression a mix of concern and relief.
"Charlotte," she said softly, moving closer to her. "You're awake. How are you feeling?"
Charlotte let out a shaky breath, her fear dissipating as she recognized her. "Maddison? What are you doing here?"
Maddison smiled gently. "I'm a nurse here now. I transferred from the daycare to work in healthcare. When I saw your name on the patient list, I couldn't believe it."
Charlotte blinked, her vision slowly coming into focus. "I... I didn't know you had switched jobs. What happened?"
Maddison pulled a chair up beside Charlotte's bed and sat down. "I wanted to pursue my passion for nursing. It's been challenging, but rewarding. And now, here I am, taking care of you."
Charlotte felt a wave of relief wash over her. "I'm so glad to see a familiar face. It's been a rough time."
Maddison reached out and took Charlotte's hand, her touch warm and comforting. "You're in good hands, Charlotte. We'll take care of you. Just focus on getting better."
Tears welled up in Charlotte's eyes as she squeezed Maddison's hand. "Thank you. I was so scared."
Maddison's eyes softened with empathy. "It's okay to be scared. But you're strong, and you have a lot of people who care about you. You're going to get through this."
Just then, the door opened again, and Autumn walked in, followed closely by Marjorie. They both looked relieved to see Charlotte awake and alert.
"How are you feeling?" Marjorie asked, her voice gentle.
"A bit better," Charlotte replied, managing a small smile. "Thank you all for being here."
Autumn, still maintaining her usual stoic demeanor, stepped closer. "You gave us quite a scare, Charlotte. You need to take care of yourself."
"I will," Charlotte promised, feeling the weight of their concern and support. "I just... I didn't expect this to happen."
Marjorie nodded understandingly. "None of us did, but the important thing is that you're okay now. We'll make sure you get the care and rest you need."
Charlotte's eyes welled up with tears, overwhelmed by the love and support surrounding her. "I don't know how to thank you all."
"Just focus on getting better," Maddison said, placing a comforting hand on her shoulder. "That's all that matters."
Marjorie's eyes flickered over Maddison, and for a moment, she froze. Her eyes widened as recognition dawned.
"Maddison?" Marjorie whispered, her voice trembling with emotion.
