Chapter 2

I nodded again and he smiled and started to walk away from me. Drake took me to the gym and understood that I didn’t want to talk because he didn’t utter a single word. The coach let me sit out for today but told me that next class was when I would officially start playing in gym. I sat on the bleachers and watched Mason come in with only 15 minutes left in the period. He saw me and gave me a small smile. He started to walk towards me.

It felt like it took him forever to become close to me because it felt like he was walking in slow motion. When he ran his hand through his hair made me want to walk over to him and kiss his kiss—Wait a minute! What has gotten into me!? I’m not going to become one of his little toys! How could I think these thoughts? I think I need a good slap on the back of my head to get my actual brain working!

I heard someone clear their throats and that’s when I noticed that Mason was sitting next to me…

Embarrassing! I’m such a love struck fool right now… I hope I’m not drooling or anything…

I blushed and mumble a low ‘hi’ and saw that he was smiling at me. I lower my head so I was staring at the bleacher beneath us. He looked so far away from me, does he not like me?

Oh God! Please get these thoughts out of my head!

“Well hello to you to, did you have fun in space?” he asked chuckling.

I blushed even deeper—if that’s even possible—and let out a small laugh because he what he said was actually funny. I then shot my head up because he started laughing too. He actually had a really nice laugh—deep and powerful laugh that could make anyone smile.

“So… you didn’t get in trouble for being late did you?” he asked with a stern face. I shook my head ‘no’. The made his face relax a little but he still had a blank expression. “Do you talk at all? To the people your close with—I mean.” I nodded. “Will you ever talk to me?”

“I’m talking to you know,” I said—proud of myself that I didn’t stutter.

His face lit up. “Well now you are before I was getting head movements.”

“That’s still c-c-c-considered talking i-i-isn’t it?”

“Well true, so we have a double art next period are you ready to see me master skills?”

“Ha funny! W-w-whet do y-you d-d-draw? S-s-stick figures? I t-that your m-m-master skill?”

“No, not entirely. So what’s your favorite color?”

I looked up at him and raised my eyebrows—I was not expecting to be interrogated but I have this feeling that tells me that he should know all about me. I looked into his eyes and saw his eyes change to a bright pale green. “I like the c-c-color green, e-e-e-especially light green. W-what about you?”

He looked at me and smirked. “I love blues, dark, but still bright blues. So do you stutter often, or are you just nervous?”

I looked down towards the floor. “It’s a c-c-constant thing I’ve been doing for the p-past few years. Some d-doctors say that it’s me doing it p-p-personally because I’m ‘depressed’ and j-j-just want to be alone, w-w-while others say it’s because I have a c-c-constant fear b-b-bugging me.” I looked up and saw his face was in a frown. “D-d-don’t frown, y-your face will get s-stuck like that f-forever!” That made him look up and me and smile. “I can c—control it sometimes. They say I w-will grow out of t-t-this stage.”

“Well that’s good. Is that why you don’t talk much?”

“Yes.”

“Well if you talked more, maybe it will go away… Yeah! That’s what you should do! You should talk more!”

The bell rang so we got up and walked out of the gym to go to art. I thought about it and smiled.

Why didn’t I think of that!? Gosh, 4 years I haven’t been talking—yet I could have been all along!

“I think that’s a g-g-great idea,” I said looking at Mason’s smiling face.
