Nirmay and Vanika arrived at Vanika’s home for the Pag phera ritual, a traditional visit to the bride’s parents home after marriage. Her family members were gathered to welcome the newlyweds.

“Aunty, Mummy, they have arrived!” Pratha exclaimed, her voice filled with excitement. She dashed into the kitchen where Anjali, her mother, and Sakshi’s mother were busy preparing a feast for the couple. The aroma of freshly cooked delicacies wafted through the air, adding to the festive ambiance.

Anjali, hearing Pratha’s announcement, quickly grabbed the Aarti thali, an intricately decorated plate with a small diya, rice grains, and a mixture of vermilion and turmeric. She hurried to the door, her heart brimming with happiness. Behind her, other family members followed, eager to participate in the welcoming ceremony.

As Anjali reached the doorway, she paused to take in the sight of Vanika and Nirmay. Vanika, looking radiant in a vibrant saree, and Nirmay, dressed in a crisp kurta, stood hand in hand, smiling warmly at the gathering crowd.

Anjali stepped forward, her eyes shimmering with pride and affection. She began the Aarti, moving the thali in circular motions in front of the couple, chanting traditional blessings for their happiness and prosperity.

The other women joined in, singing a melodious welcome song, their voices blending harmoniously. Some of the older relatives showered the couple with rice grains and flower petals, symbolising blessings and good wishes.

After the Aarti, Anjali placed a small tilak on both Nirmay and Vanika’s foreheads, completing the ritual. Anjali and Rahul then embraced Vanika tightly, whispering words of love and welcome into her ear.

“Aao beta,” Rahul said, welcoming them warmly.

Vanika’s younger cousins rushed forward, taking their hands and leading them inside. Vanika’s eyes widened in delight as she took in the beautifully decorated home.

“Aye baba, lagta hai kisi dusre ke kholi me aa gaya,” Vanika quipped in Baburao style, making Nirmay chuckle.

“Mummy, Papa, itna sab karne ki jaroorat nahi thi,” Nirmay said, looking around appreciatively.

“Kyun beta, tum pehli baar damad ban ke hamare ghar aaye ho aur jada kahan hai kuch,” Rahul replied with a smile.

“Baithiye na, khade kyun hai,” Pratha’s mother said, guiding them to the sofa.

“Tu chal na hamare sath,” Sakshi said, trying to pull Vanika away.

“Kya chal na hamare sath? Yahi baitho sab baatein karege, vaise bhi hame jiju se training ke time ki baatein sunni hai,” Vanika’s cousin Sahil interjected.

Pratha and Sakshi sat beside Vanika, eager to join the conversation.

“Jiju, ye Vanika wahan bhi ulti seedhi harkat karti hogi na?” another cousin asked, curiosity sparkling in his eyes.

“Ulti seedhi bhi nahi, pata nahi kya kya karti thi... cycle race me gana gana, training time par bewakoofi karna… pehle din to itni seriously isne bola ki isse kuch puchna hai… aur itna serious question tha ki itna kam khana kyun milta hai,” Nirmay said, making everyone chuckle.

“Haan to serious mudda hi tha. Mujhe pehle din thodi pata tha ki itna hi dete hai to puch li… aur ye jo naha dhokar mere peeche pade the… mai hi milti thi daante ko,” Vanika retorted.
