CHAPTER 9 - PROUD OF ME?

The second I get out of class the only person I want to tell is Mateo.

I want to see the look on his face when I told him I got an A.

I wait for him outside of his 'Creative Writing' class. As soon as he sees me standing by the door he smiles.

"So?" He asks. "What did you get?"

I show him the paper and he smiles. "That's great! Congratulations."

It's embarrassing but I started jumping around the hallway like a little kid. I've never been so happy about a grade before.

"Okay, okay." He says trying to get me to calm down because I'm acting like a 7 year old on drugs. "It's just an A, no need to freak out."

"It's not just an A to me. I've never gotten one before." I say happily.

Mateo was trying to teach me something but somehow we ended up talking about how many friends I have.

"I mean it." He exclaims. "You've got too many friends. I can't keep up with them. How does one even accumulate this many friends?"

"Well im cheer captain so im friends with everyone on the team and then of course..social media."

"Ahh yes." He says. "Social media. Very toxic and a waste of time."

"I don't think it is." I say. "I've got like sixteen thousand followers on Tiktok!"

Mateo was taking a drink of his water but he almost spit it out. "16K?"

"Yeah. So?"

He just stares at me. "Sixteen. Thousand. People. What?"

"What can I say, I guess I'm just very very pretty." I say with a playful grin. "So what about you, how many followers do you have?"

"Im not on social media." He says.

WHAT?

He notices my wide eyed look and says "not everyone uses social media, Bridgette."

"Well do you atleast have like..friends?" I ask.

He glares at me. "Yes I do. Believe it or not, I have friends."

"Who?" I ask, genuinely curios. "I havnt seen you hang out with anybody at school."

"Marcus." Mateo exclaims. "I guess you could say he's my best friend."

"Isabel's brother?" I ask.

"Yes." He responds. "Doesnt he have two sisters though?"

"Yeah, Isabel and Annabelle." I answer.

"Those both sound like creepy doll names." Mateo says.

I laugh. "Annabelle....like come on."

We're not even sure why as it's not even that funny but we both start laughing our asses off.

After cheer practice I actually feel like im dying. Im sweating buckets.

When I get to the locker room and feel the fresh air its like immediate relief.

"Yes." I mumble. "Cold air."

Once im done changing back into normal clothes, Lexus comes up beside me.

"Im throwing a party tomorrow night." She says.

"Yes!" I yell. "Its been so long. The last party I went to was-"

The one where Matthew said he wanted to take a break.

"Yeah." Lexus says nervously. "But this party will be so much better. I mean I know he'll be there but so will a bunch of other people. Trust me you wont even know he's there."

"Its Paris!" I argue. "She's the best 'Gilmore Girls' character and you cannot tell me otherwise."

"No." Mateo argues back. "Paris was so annoying and a bully in Season one. How can anyone like her. The best character has to be Luke."

"What?"

"He's the only unproblematic character...name one thing he did wrong in the show."

"Not tell Lorelai about his 12 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER..WHAT?"

He sighs. "Well, you got me there."

I pause for a second. "How did we even end up talking about Gilmore Girls?"

"I dont know." He responds. "We need to get back to Biology."

"But it's so boring." I whine. "I dont understand scientists. How does one even care about these things?"

"I dont know." He replies. "But you need to learn them or you'll fail."

"Ugh." I lean so far back in my chair I almost tip over.

"Arent you proud of me?" I ask Mateo.

"Not this again. It was just one test why would I be proud?"

I sigh. "Your proud of me. You just dont want to admit it."

"Fine." Mateo groans. "Im proud of you. Are you happy now?"

"Elated." I say smiling and skipping down the hallway.

"You look like you just walked out of a coming of age movie." Mateo says. "Like 'lets all hold hands and skip together' like what?"

I laugh.
