As the school year progressed, the interactions between Izuku and Katsuki continued to evolve, albeit slowly. Izuku remained steadfast in his efforts to reach Katsuki, while Katsuki’s defenses showed signs of wear under the persistent pressure.
One day after class, as the students gathered for a brief period of free time, Katsuki was sitting alone, his usual group engaged in their own activities. Izuku, feeling the familiar pang of determination, approached him with a cautious smile.
“Hey, Kacchan,” Izuku began, his voice gentle. “Do you want to grab a snack or something? I’ve got some extra bento.”
Katsuki looked up, his expression a mix of surprise and annoyance. “Why the hell would I want to eat your leftovers, Deku?”
Izuku shrugged, trying to keep the mood light. “It’s not leftovers. I just thought you might be hungry.”
Katsuki’s gaze softened for a brief moment before he hardened again. “I’m fine. I don’t need anything from you.”
Despite the rejection, Izuku persisted. “Alright, but if you change your mind, I’ll be around. You know where to find me.”
Katsuki watched as Izuku walked away, a small part of him feeling the sting of the rejection. It was clear that Izuku’s continued efforts were chipping away at his defenses, but he wasn’t ready to fully let down his guard.
Later that evening, Katsuki found himself in the common room, the flickering light of the television casting a soft glow over the space. He sat alone, lost in thought, when the sound of approaching footsteps drew his attention.
Izuku entered, carrying a small bag. He looked around before his eyes landed on Katsuki, and he offered a friendly wave.
“Hey, Kacchan,” Izuku said, settling into a seat nearby. “I brought some snacks. Thought you might want to join me.”
Katsuki’s eyes flickered with curiosity but remained guarded. “Still trying to play the nice guy, huh?”
Izuku nodded, pulling out the snacks and offering a small, encouraging smile. “I just figured it’s nice to share a moment. No strings attached.”
Katsuki hesitated before finally reaching for a snack. The simple act of accepting it was a small, significant step. They sat in silence for a while, the tension between them easing slightly as they shared the quiet evening.
It wasn’t long before Katsuki’s usual bravado began to fade, and he found himself engaging in casual conversation. The conversation was hesitant at first, but gradually, they began to talk about their classes, their training routines, and even their future goals.
“You know,” Katsuki said finally, his voice softer than usual, “I don’t get why you’re so hell-bent on sticking around. You’ve got your own life. Why bother with me?”
Izuku glanced at Katsuki, his expression sincere. “Because I care about you, Kacchan. You’re important to me. And even if you don’t want to admit it, I think you need someone in your corner.”
Katsuki’s gaze fell to the floor, his expression unreadable. The words resonated within him, a painful reminder of the loneliness he had been trying to escape.
Izuku’s continued presence was a beacon of hope, a sign that maybe, just maybe, there was a chance to rebuild what had been lost.
