Maurecia's heart raced as she stood by the coffee machine in the Wayside School cafeteria. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee filled the air, and her gaze never wavered from the door. Todd would be here any moment now.
Todd, the boy with the unruly hair and the mischievous smile. The boy who made her heart flutter like a thousand butterflies. She'd been crushing on him since the first day of school, and her feelings had only intensified over time.
"Maurecia," Jenny nudged her, grinning. "He's coming!"
Maurecia's pulse quickened. She adjusted her pink roller skates, her fingers trembling. Todd walked in, his backpack slung over one shoulder. His eyes met hers, and for a moment, the world seemed to slow down.
"Hey," Todd said, flashing that crooked smile. "Coffee time?"
Maurecia nodded, her voice barely a whisper. "Yeah. Coffee."
They stood side by side, filling their cups. Maurecia knew Todd's order by heart: strong black coffee with a dash of cinnamon. She added the cinnamon, stirred it just right, and handed him the cup.
"Thanks," Todd said, taking a sip. His eyes softened. "You always get it perfect."
Maurecia's heart soared. "It's nothing."
But it was everything. She'd memorized his preferences—the way he liked his coffee, the exact temperature, the precise amount of cream. It was her secret way of showing she cared.
Todd leaned against the counter, studying her. "You know, Maurecia, you're something special."
Her cheeks flushed. "Special? Me?"
"Yeah." He chuckled. "You remember my coffee order better than I do. And you're not afraid to punch me when I annoy you."
She grinned. "Well, you deserve it sometimes."
They sat at their usual table, sipping coffee. The cafeteria buzzed with noise—students laughing, trays clattering—but Maurecia only had eyes for Todd.
"Maurecia," Todd said, his voice low. "I've been meaning to ask you something."
Her heart skipped a beat. "What is it?"
He hesitated, then reached across the table, taking her hand. "Would you like to go to the school dance with me?"
Maurecia's breath caught. "Yes! Absolutely."
And just like that, the world shifted. Todd's fingers intertwined with hers, and she felt like she was floating. Maybe her unrequited crush wasn't so unrequited after all.
As they finished their coffee, Maurecia realized something. It wasn't just about the coffee. It was about knowing each other—the little things that made their hearts race. Todd fixing her coffee just the way she liked it was his way of saying, "I see you."
And maybe, just maybe, they were brewing more than coffee. They were brewing a connection—one that would last beyond the school walls and into the unknown.
