As the year was ending, I was busy making sure everything was in order, and I would get the best results possible. Emmi and I had already received an early offer to university for next year, we just had to finish our schooling before we could accept. I wanted to do my best, and maybe get the maths award in the process.
About a month before the graduation ceremony, Master Ali and Master Rhin asked me to do a demonstration of lightsaber skills for the ceremony. I agreed, of course, and then set out to plan the event.
"Do you have any ideas?" I asked the group that had assembled to help me work it out. It was a good group, Alox, Eron, Emmi, Chantel, Cassie, Rin, and Romi, were helping me with the idea.
"Well, you're a master of defence, why not do something with that," said Rin. Since the incursion, a few years ago all of us Jedi students who had lightsabers always carried them. She was lazily moving her hilt in her hand; she wasn't going to activate her green blade right there.
"I'm not sure how," I said.
"I've seen you practice," said Alox. "You can make a blue light wall with ease, that's probably a good place to start."
"Maybe you could show off how good you are at stopping things from getting through," said Eron.
"Maybe handsome, but how do I show that."
"Maybe water or shiny paper or alike," said Cassie.
"That would be cool," said Chantel. "To see a stream of droplets or balls of paper flying at you and none of them get close to you."
"Yeah, that would be great to see," said Romi. "I'm for something shiny and maybe a little larger than water droplets, though the steam for the water might be cool."
"Emmi, do you think you could handle flinging that many small projectiles at me?"
"I don't know. I'm sure I could do that but I'm not sure what density would look best and how to stop them going into the crowd."
"Hence the paper or water," said Rin.
"Could we find a way to practice," said Alox.
"I think so," I said. "The main combat area is enclosed and I'm sure we can get some leftover paper that we should be able to ball up."
"Ok," said Emmi, "let's go and see what we can do. Josy, go get the area booked for tomorrow afternoon. The rest of us, let's see how much paper we can get and start making the balls as projectiles."
We went off and managed to get everything together to test. Unfortunately, the paper idea didn't work. The paper was too light so they were hard to control and would get blown away by the lightsaber motion. The others said it didn't look good either. We tried water droplets, which were easier to control but were harder to see than the paper. All they could see was the small spirits of steam coming off my blade. They all said the feet were impressive, almost like I could stand in a shower and not get wet. We were back to square one.
A few days later we still hadn't come up with a good idea. I was beginning to think that maybe I could do a display of the light wall defence, then maybe include Emmi's blade to make it a green and blue wall. It would look cool, but it felt too simple.
Eron and I were walking back to get breakfast after exercising in the morning. "I have an idea for your display," he said.
"Oh, do share."
"I don't know how good it would be but maybe you could use the training droids. They can shoot quite quickly. That might show off the defensive style better."
